Save the firemen, reduce their numbers

According to the Guest Viewpoint in Sunday's (January 20,2008) Press & Sun-Bulletin, "Hidden risk: Firefighters' cancer rates higher than average" by William H. Newland, president of I.A.F.F. Local 729, the union representing the Binghamton firefighters . firefighters lives are at a higher risk of cancer.

In an effort to save as many firefighters lives as possible City of Binghamton should reduce as much as possible the number of firefighters in its department. Right now Binghamton is putting at risk far more firefighters per capita than any other comparable city or town in NY State, and, as far as we can tell, the entire US.

Men are needlessly putting their lives at risk when Binghamton could easily reduce its department by 10% to 20% and close a station or two, bringing it in line with other departments of cities Binghamton size thereby reducing the risk of exposing more firefighters than necessary to the dangers mentioned above.

Let us not endanger the lives of any more men than we need to.

The City of Binghamton has to do what is right for the health of the men and limit their numbers. It would be irresponsible to risk the lives of 134 firefighters when the City of Binghamton could get by with 120 or less.

Look how few men Rome, NY puts at risk. The Rome Fire Dept. proudly protects over 40,000 people living and working in an area of 72.5 sq. miles. They operate out of three stations with approximately 85 paid members. Its yearly emergency calls average over 3,700 responses.

Utica, with 15,000 more people and 60% more area to cover than Binghamton, has only 120 firefighters.

On the other hand, the City of Binghamton Fire Department with 134 firefighters for 45.000 people covers only 11 square miles. The department is comprised of a staff of 134 paid uniform fire-fighters and three civilian employees. The department operates out of six stations (twice as many as Rome, NY despite Rome covering about seven times the area), a training center and repair facility.

Here are more numbers. Anyway you look at it Bijnghamton is risking too many firefighters lives. Cut their numbers and make them safer:

Rome has half the Firefighters as Binghamton, and for good reason. They go on half as many calls as Binghamton does. No, they are not all fire calls, most of them are EMS calls but if somebody in my family has a heart attack I want somebody to come help. Binghamton Fire has a 3 minute average response time to everywhere in the city. I bet Rome doesn't have that, not because of any deficiency on the part of Rome's Firefighters but because their three stations can't possibly be close enough to every building/residence for that to be possible. That's what Binghamton gets for funding 134 positions, the lowest average response time you are going to find pretty much anywhere.

Big deal.

Try as you might you cannot justify the numbers no matter how much you want to scare people.

Look at the fires this weekend. The boys showed up to prevent the spread of the fire. All structures were lost.

Same thing every time.

No way in hell we need six station, 134 full-time fireman and to spend $13,000,000. Explain the stations. Rome has half the number for seven times the area. How does six station make a difference in the emergency calls???

No way. No how.

When the city goes belly up we will thank the firemen and their union for its greed. Job well done you primadonnas. Any college degrees among you and your $90,000 salaries????

Guest sick of it

Obviously this post is either Ed or another one of his groupies who has no idea what they are talking about. Do some research and find out that Ed is a mental case from Canada who neither lives nor pays taxes to the city of Binghamton. He is a self proclaimed "old school pamphletier" .....meaning he just likes to cause trouble and take a stand on issues for whatever reason. maybe to stroke his own ego, maybe he like the attention....whatever it is, pay no mind he should be on meds and I personally would prefer he head back over the border.

Not that I am defending them, but you also have to take into consideration the time the fire started to the time it was actually reported. It could have been a long enough time that any effort would still produce the same results.

Guest Won't be fooled again
Obviously this post is either Ed or another one of his groupies who has no idea what they are talking about.

So inform us.

Why does Binghamton pay $13,000,000 for 134 firefighters when every other city town or village not only in NY State in the entire country gets by with about 60 to 70% of that per capita?

Inform us please.

How does Rome get by covering an area seven times that of Binghamton with half the fire stations, three instead of six?

Are people dying en masse in Rome, NY? No, of course they are.

What planet are you from?

If you want to talk about the blame game, you can start by looking at the past and current administrations in Binghamton. I would hardly say that the firemen are the reason for insolvency.

DUH.

well for one you posting under different names and answering your own posts???? How about your LONG track record of causing turmoil, even being charged with harrassment. You just enjoy stirring the proverbial crap. Its unreal considering you dont live in the city and have only been in this country since 2005???

If you dont believe any of this feel free to google Mr not allowed and read up on him.....between drugs, harrassment and his ongoing rants...it should be convincing enough.

Good day

As expected you have no proof or facts to back up your claim.

Ed posts as himself and as Guest. Almost everybody here posts as a Guest because they are cowards.

People like to think Ed posts everywhere. For instance, people want to insist Ed is Ray on Pressconnects.com but he is not.

You are anonymous liars because you can't take the truth. You have no idea how address the issues. You lack the mental capacity to debate.

I like the op's ideal of closing a couple stations but it will only happen if the firemen get striped of their power to scare people do like endicott let men retire than dont rehire for that position. they closed a station in endicott and never have a proublem.

You always can't go by square miles - what kind of businesses and such in the city go into the making of the Fire Dept Not only residential but commercial buildings, factories, schools, churches, retirement homes and high rises and other buildings need to be considered
