I remember when I first saw that film in the theatre (an experience!), and that scene came on I was thinking (like almost everyone else)"WTF That dude is really messed up". But then we thought that every scene he was in! I either read or heard it on the DVD commentary that he totally adlibbed that bottle-clanging AND the chant. The writer/director had a script for that scene that just wasn't working for them and the actor himself said "I have an idea" and they filmed it without anyone knowing what he was going to do.
