Council authorizes $9.4 million for various projects

By Brian Liberatore

Press & Sun-Bulletin

BINGHAMTON -- The city could bond up to $9.4 million for capital projects in 2008, including $2 million each for street reconstruction, parking ramp repairs and sewer line replacement.

City Council voted 6-to-1 Monday evening to give Mayor Matthew T. Ryan permission to borrow the money. Teri Rennia,D-3rd District, voted against the resolution, but she was not alone in words of opposition.

"If you don't have enough money to get it, you have to save enough to get it," said Bob Weslar, D-1st District, who despite his criticism voted for the resolution. "We have to look at how we're spending our money, how we're saving our money."

Along with the infrastructure repairs the bond includes:

* $500,000 for a citywide software upgrade;

* $500,000 for bridge improvements;

* $63,000 for parks equipment;

* $250,000 to help make parks handicapped accessible;

* $1 million for water lines;

* $850,000 for equipment for the Department of Public Works;

* $75,000 for work at Ely Park Golf Course.

Another item on the bond list -- $200,000 to install global positioning in the city's DPW fleet -- evoked nearly universal criticism from members on last year's City Council, who described it as a superfluous and took it out of the budget. But when that council voted down its own amended budget, the GPS line was restored by default. Council members Monday said it was unlikely the council would approve the GPS units when it came up for a vote.

"A lot of these projects are going to come up before us again," said Ed Collins, D-7th District. "This doesn't mean we're going to spend $9.4 million, it means we're giving the city the option to get these jobs done."

Also at the meeting, council members unanimously approved a resolution asking Congress to open an impeachment inquiry into President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

"Everybody has to be held accountable," said Charles Kramer, D-6th District. The resolution asks that Congress open the hearing based on the administration's disregard for the U.S. Constitution, condoning of torture and lies leading up to the invasion of Iraq.

"It might end as a symbolic stance," said Sean Massey, D-5th, "but it's an important one."

There you have it!

There is your City Council. There are your tax dollars at work.

Giving away the farm and voting to impeach a President with about ten months left to go in office and eight before a new President is elected.

What a waste of space those people.

How much do you think a city on the verge of insolvency is going to pay in interest one that $10,000,000!

Binghamton is going to be known as the Lunatic Capital of the East.

You were warned.

Will someone in the name of Terrance Alliwiches Mahoney (What old movie character is that thename of?) explain to me is our City Council so challenged for City work that they pass resolutions that mean squat & even less of doing any good? THis is what we pay taxes for? The sad thing is that our assistant mayor is working with this, & is being paid to do so.

If things keep up like this, The present administration will give new meaning to the phrase "One Hit Wonder" & a former candidate will liik VERY promising for the next race.

Sorry: Bush and Chenney can't be tried for war crimes... In one of the war funding resolutions passed by congress the Bush white house had added a clause which makes Bush/Chenney immune from being prosecuted for war crimes in regards to the Iraq war!!!

There are no grounds for impeachment exclusive of the delusions of war crimes that are dancing around inside of these moonbats' heads.

Bush and Cheney should be tried as war criminals for crimes against humanity.

Typically silly left-wing fantasy. Childish and pathetic. Stupidly pointless. Y’know, progressive.

There can be no democracy without an engaged citizenry!

Do you right wingers remember that thing we call the constitution?

How about a government run BY the people FOR the people?

Symbolic? absolutely. Here's a president, duly elected, serving his term. The Republican guy is in, the Dem guy is out. Four year terms. That's how it works.

But instead of just shutting the DELETED up and waiting a little while longer for the cycle to come back around to vote again, they want to arrest the guy they don't like for just that reason.

--He disagrees with us, Sheriff Dimplick! Clap him in irons! We shall have government by the will of the people if we have to arrest every last one of the people.

You and I should be worried that these brain-dead council morons are operating motor vehicles. I'm 20 miles away from the city, but I'm not comfortable with such a narrow buffer zone.

Silly me-I thought local government should be dealing with local issues-who cares what city council thinks about Bush, or polar bears or China's global emissions. What about the city's problems-this symbolic BS is just that-symbolic. Anyone who votes for a city councilman-or woman-based on stuff like this gets what they deserve. Good luck binghamton-you are going to need it!!

Yeah, well, good luck with that. It ain’t gonna happen.

I’m not exactly thrilled with Bush either, but there is nothing — NOTHING — that warrants his impeachment.

Silly me! I thought that the actions of the federal government affect us all--even, gasp--on a local level!

Cosider the amount of money being funneled to the war in Iraq which is causing the federal government to cut funding local and state governments! Think about that when you get your tax bill!
