Council authorizes $9.4 million for various projects

By Brian Liberatore

Press & Sun-Bulletin

BINGHAMTON -- The city could bond up to $9.4 million for capital projects in 2008, including $2 million each for street reconstruction, parking ramp repairs and sewer line replacement.

City Council voted 6-to-1 Monday evening to give Mayor Matthew T. Ryan permission to borrow the money. Teri Rennia,D-3rd District, voted against the resolution, but she was not alone in words of opposition.

"If you don't have enough money to get it, you have to save enough to get it," said Bob Weslar, D-1st District, who despite his criticism voted for the resolution. "We have to look at how we're spending our money, how we're saving our money."

Along with the infrastructure repairs the bond includes:

* $500,000 for a citywide software upgrade;

* $500,000 for bridge improvements;

* $63,000 for parks equipment;

* $250,000 to help make parks handicapped accessible;

* $1 million for water lines;

* $850,000 for equipment for the Department of Public Works;

* $75,000 for work at Ely Park Golf Course.

Another item on the bond list -- $200,000 to install global positioning in the city's DPW fleet -- evoked nearly universal criticism from members on last year's City Council, who described it as a superfluous and took it out of the budget. But when that council voted down its own amended budget, the GPS line was restored by default. Council members Monday said it was unlikely the council would approve the GPS units when it came up for a vote.

"A lot of these projects are going to come up before us again," said Ed Collins, D-7th District. "This doesn't mean we're going to spend $9.4 million, it means we're giving the city the option to get these jobs done."

Also at the meeting, council members unanimously approved a resolution asking Congress to open an impeachment inquiry into President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

"Everybody has to be held accountable," said Charles Kramer, D-6th District. The resolution asks that Congress open the hearing based on the administration's disregard for the U.S. Constitution, condoning of torture and lies leading up to the invasion of Iraq.

"It might end as a symbolic stance," said Sean Massey, D-5th, "but it's an important one."

There you have it!

There is your City Council. There are your tax dollars at work.

Giving away the farm and voting to impeach a President with about ten months left to go in office and eight before a new President is elected.

What a waste of space those people.

How much do you think a city on the verge of insolvency is going to pay in interest one that $10,000,000!

Binghamton is going to be known as the Lunatic Capital of the East.

You were warned.

Oh Goody, Tax dollars at work, this pathetic bunch who sit in chambers who should be impeached from the mayor on down, asking for this request toward our President Bush.

I request total backgrounds of each and every council member as far back as it can go, and we the people have a right to see what comes forth. Yes, from the top on down.

oh here we go again....Bush is behind 9/11...he is the mastermind Dr. Evil of the world...You liberal pot smokers kill me....get a grip. There are millions of people in the world that despise the USA and some lunatics will stop at nothing to harm us. And this started long before GW. Heres a question for you crazy left wing lunatic fringe. why isn't the fact that Bill Clinton financially supported the muslim terrorists in Bosnia made public. these are the same groups that are now behind the daily bombings of not only US personel but also thousands of Iraqi people. it's funny how the left has tunnel vison when they want to.

But the main point is that this thread is on the lunacy of the local idiots on the Binghamton City Council who waste their time and our tax dollars to vote on a resolution to impeach a president that will be gone in 11 months. This is not a binghamton issue...it is a national issue. Turn around the city first, then maybe if you have some time to kill, take on national issues. :blink:

Did you learn this style of clever commentary from a close-cover-before-striking-school on the back of a matchbook?

Liberals inhabit their own universe in which reality is optional.
