The End Is Near
I almost fell out of my chair the other day when I read about the arena and it's 40 million dollar upgrades. They should take the 40 million and build a few parking ramps so people don't have to drive around or park a mile away looking for a place to park when there is an event going on. The arena is just fine the way it is. It was built for hockey and the current arena serves that purpose just fine. If there was ample parking, more people would attend events. Take the 40 million and build a convention center that can handle 25,000+ people. It's the only way big acts would come to the area. We have 17/86, 81, and 88 intersecting in our county. It can't get any better. I wonder how many buses drive through Doome county on their way to Tioga, Turning Stone, Moheegan Sun, Niagra, etc. They could all be coming here. We should have a beautiful place for concerts. We should have a casino here. This county is so f#*ked up. If it wasn't for elderly family living here, I would have fled years ago. NYS is such a shithole run by a worthless moron of a governor. I wish cancer would take him.
2pelo Honey
Good point about the parking downtown. It brought to my mind a recent story about delays in the ramp under construction due to slight change in composition that the state had to approve for funding, and I cannot for the life of me find that darn story online. ginger
I agree about the Casino...the old Masonic Temple building, I've been mentioning that for a long time. And didn't we upgrade the arena in the last 7-8- yrs to the tune of millions of dollars? Seriously, you wished cancer on somebody?
The End Is Near
I actually changed my mind about having a casino in Broome. After giving it much thought, I believe the right thing to do is promote Tioga downs. Jeff Gural give A LOT of money to communities and charities. Broome could def use the convention center but a casino is not needed at this time.
thomas
We don't need a convention center or a casino and we don't need unsightly ramps. And the Arena can and should be upgraded.
BubbaGump
20 years to late? Thomas has one of those rascals that he uses to go to the Arena so parkings no problem. Lol Binghamton needs the parking ramps more than Arena upgrades. What a fool.

He even brought back and sponsored the Broome county airshow.

Not a small, 300 space, parking garage... but one as big or bigger the former Collier St parking garage.
thomas
We don't need that monstrosity in front of the Arena. Binghamton looks 100% better since they tore down that filthy ramp in city center. The $40 million is for the Arena not your ramp. Doesn't hurt to walk a little.
92CorruptCourtStreet
Whatever happens I am sure Fred was a part of the financials in the possible grants involved. Just like the $350,000 grant he obtained for Enjoie golf course this week.
ginger
Good morning I thought there already was a plan for the ramp...stores on the bottom, ramp above and then I thought apartments atop of it. Then some ruling came down about those parking spots being allowed to be counted as resident/student parking and I never heard anything else about it. I liked my idea better..a tall slimmer pylon shaped structure to complement the Marine Midland building and because that shape fit into the landscape slant that was there. Heated, using solar panels in place of windows, elevator of course ,valet parking only...green roof on top with open catering space, roof top bar...a catering hall and kitchens/ bathrooms on the next floor down...in case it rains. Did we ever get any data from SUNY on how they made out with their solar power experiment/panel..how much energy were they able to produce in this area? ^ I just gave a cursory google...the engineering and sci building has the 2 story passive panels plus a bunch of other stuff geothermal...also a reference to the Susquehanna community being able to heat their hot water supply with the energy produced from solar panels. It was my thought that a tall parking garage should be able to power itself and perhaps share some of the energy with the county building...I was told all you would need is a wire to connect. How many years ago was it that this came up? Like 7 or 8? Should have been done already. All of that regional economic development money and what do we have to show for it besides the farmers market and oh what's it called...the hub...for entrepreneurs...you know what I mean. M_Sable
How is running an entertaiment venue a government function? Broome County Government Casino and Six Flags theme park? Why not? Tax dollars should support that kind of money-losing bullshit. It's been working so well for decades...
ginger
^ You would think with all of the times I have to stop for fuel or coffee I would be purchasing lottery tickets everywhere I go. Surprisingly, I never even look at them! We have casinos in every neighborhood...they're called convenience stores. You can play quick draw at the Valero on Broad Ave! thomas
Not opposed to Arena parking. I'm against ramps in the wrong places. But whatever the well respected architects create. it'll be good, I'm sure. This will be an exciting upgrade.

It won't change anytime soon though. This government/corporate "partnership" is well entrenched in our society. Most prominently around the sports culture. Sports fans think it is the responsibility of all taxpayers to subsidize their fetish when their particular sport can't draw enough dollars to survive on its own. Very stupid as a community to allow that but sadly that is where we are at these days.
