New Assessments in Broome?

Has this happened in recent years and I just haven't paid attention?

Opened my school tax bills. I have three adjoining parcels and I'm in the Chenango Forks district. Took digital pictures of last year's school taxes so I brought them up to compare. Assumed they would all be within the 2% tax cap, this year to last. Nope. Instead, this year's are all between 4.6% and 6.4% higher! Convenient way to get around a cap!

A quick check of school budgets show all of them were in compliance of the tax cap. Still, Chenango Forks is getting a windfall from me this year. Aren't they supposed to notify me if I'm being reassessed? I haven't done any recent improvements to my property except for about a 100 feet of privacy fence after NYSEG slaughtered my hedge to protect their power lines.

Happen to anyone else?

Happens all the time.  The "2%" tax cap is a lie.  What it really means is that the total taxable amount that is assessed on the taxpayers can only go up by a value that is called 2% but is rarely 2%.  A week before the budget vote you should have received a postcard in the mail that describes the limit and how it is calculated.

Put this into Google "chenango forks school taxes"  My second link describes part of it.  Not very well I might add.

I looked on a lot of District pages but could not find a full description of how the taxes are calculated.  They probably do not want you to know.

What you can do is to go to the next meeting of your school board.  Ask them for the information about how this was calculated.  I will bet that not one of the school board members knows the whole process.  In fact the Superintendent may not know.  For most school districts this work is done by the BOCES business office.

The bills say only one of my parcels is getting the "STAR savings." That's the one our house is on. The big change is "% levy change" above. I will be making a trip down to the town office to ask why the generic "% levy change" was only 1.900% last year and it's 4.600% this year. I expect to get shoulder shrugs and "nothing  can do about it" answers.  Thank you.

Don't go to the town office.  They will direct you to the school district.

Only your main residence is eligible for STAR savings.  Your other properties are not.

My biggest complaint about school taxes is if you don't have kids or never had kids in any school you should be paying a very much lower rate, if anything at all, than people who do or did. Forcing me to educate your kids into a socialist/marxist model is stealing from me. Prove me wrong. Your kid, your money.

It's called being part of society. There are roads I never drive on, that my tax dollars go to. There are many people on this forum who have internet/electricity because of publicly funded infrastructure.

You benefit from children who can read, write and do math.

When are we going to stop pretending tax exempt organizations are "not for profit" ?

I think we need more community based spending in the form of local taxes so City of Binghamton property owners can have a break.

(somebody tell Elizabeth Warren she doesn't need to tax the middle class)

These tax exempt non profit organizations are the biggest taxpayer money laundering scheme ever created by establishment politicians from both major parties. It is how they enrich themselves, their families and their donors. Is there any wonder left as to why they are so desperately trying to unseat Trump and nullify the most most beautiful example of why our founders implemented the Electoral College system at the Federal level? He is wrecking this system for us, no f+cking doubt about it. They are in pure panic mode. We have one hell of a fight but I think it can happen in his second term.

I bet if Mayor David made a list of all of the so called 'not for profit" organizations who own property in the City of Binghamton, totaled up their valuations... Lourdes and UHS alone ...I wonder how much taxing the property of just those 2 organizations is worth? A small fortune .

Make it happen.

Rich David is bought and paid for. Not going to happen. He is just there to collect a taxpayer salary and kick the can down the road to protect the system. Just like Blow Job Datta. They are all in on it. Getting rich laundering our tax money while exempting their biggest donors. Sad fact. We need more Trump's to run for local office.

He had his own tax assessment reduced 27%.  Must be he forgot about the rest of Binghamtonians.

Did you know some administrator at Lourdes makes $575,000/year. That's twice the salary of Governor Cuomo and half the salary of the Chancellor of the SUNY system. Not for profit?

Perhaps there is something President Trump can do by executive order to make not for profits pay their fair share.

I think you're right however I don't recall the result if any. I do recall reading Scranton gets help from the colleges. I can't remember if the hospitals kicked in.

Interesting project for someone bored.

Learn population of Broome County.

Learn Employment Numbers in Broome County.

Learn the high percentage of "workers" in the "non profit" environment compared to private business environment.

Good morning JB.  As Bing is wont to aver, EVERYPLACE ELSE in the US is doing better than we are. Governor Cuomo treats us like lepers. Somebody has to pay. As the president of Columbia so eloquently stated...I'm not qualified. I was however born under a bad sign with a blue moon in my eye. :) Can you tell? lol

Apparently I'm not the only one. I listen to Binghamton Now almost everyday and rarely hear people complain about taxes. Before I fell asleep I was surprised to hear a woman complaining about Donna Lupardo not having her priorities straight vis a vis the last survey she sent out asking constituents if we should ban flava flav vaporizers.

I'm about to take a second job. Surviving isn't good enough for me. I wouldn't have to if my taxes and the surcharges on my bills and fuel were significantly lower. Somebody has to pay...

NOW ABOUT THOSE NOT FOR PROFITS...starting with, Lourdes and UHS. Then we'll move on to the university who has money to purchase more property in Johnson City. They need to pay their fair share before they are allowed to purchase anymore property.

CASH ONLY, PLEASE AND THANKS.

Non profits are a joke in Broome County.  They take property off the tax rolls and pay nothing in return.

Look at the United Way.  They have at least 21 employees.  What for?  They are supposed to be a group that raises money for many groups so that they don't have to.  They hit up big organizations to do payroll deduction for their employees.  The fundraising runs Sept thru Dec.  What do these 21 employees do the other 8 months?

The UW has not filed a Form 990 with the Attorney General in 3 years.  WTF?  What are they hiding?  The President of the board when they stopped filing 990s was Sue Mcloud, former superintendent of UE, another non-profit.

Close them up.  Too many Executive Directors of non-profits in Broome County.  Most have overlapping missions.  Churches, Vines, the Food Bank and Chow all "feed" people.  Why 4, why not 1 group doing the work?

All good points. But I'll remind you, the only "businesses" that never run out of customers are the one who give away free things (with other people's money)

Speaking of running out of customers...Oh Look! Federal funding grants cut to sanctuary cities. I wonder if President Trump knows the city of Binghamton is a legally classified "welcoming city"? I bet Mayor David didn't tell him that at the mayors convention.
