$25 mm budget hole?

Why hasn't Mr. Garnar taken steps to date? He should have had furloughs at the Arena from day 1 of the shutdown, just for starters. Probably same with Social Services and other offices not to mention the airport.

He should insist that BCC immediately STOP paying rent at the airport to the tune of thousands for a decrepit antique albatross of a plane that will never serve a non-existent aircraft maintenance degree program.

He should insist that he and all of his department heads take a 10% pay cut effective immediately. He should seek to eliminate positions in his press office, county parks (reduce hours) and, since so many were released from the jail he should cut Correction Officer positions. Furlough everyone at the Forum.

Mayor David should close the zoo permanently. Animal Adventure is far superior and private sector. Ditch municipal trash and force homeowners to self transport or contract with private haulers. Or have the city contract with Waste Management or another private hauler.

Now is the time to make the cuts. We've pushed it off too long.

Gotta agree with a whole lotta that, Thelma.  The county should not be running entertainment venues.  The airport is nothing but a $$$ sinkhole. We' had private trash pickup for 10 years and it was fine.  Now I just make a run to the county transfer station once a week.  No big deal, costs me about $2.25 a week.  The big budget killer at the jail is uncontrolled overtime so people can make a bundle and boost their retirement final three year average.

Close the Airport there is only 1 flight a day, this is a luxury we can no longer afford. The Sheriff of Broome County spends money like a drunken sailor with no regard for the taxpayers. As much as I would hate to see it happen perhaps fiscal reality dictates eliminating the Sheriffs road patrol and only keeping the jail and civil divisions operating. The New York State Police would then be responsible for the enforcement end of things.

Instead of crying about the budget Garner needs to do something about it, make the difficult decisions that he is paid to make.  Things are not going to be back to normal for a very long time if ever.

Garner isn't the only one waiting for the president to bail him out. Watching the joint legislative hearings regarding covid 19 and hospitals...I have never seen so many people and organizations with their hand out. Too many big salaried indian chiefs and not enough money...no wonder healthcare costs an arm and a leg.

There are too many 501c3 organizations in this county, with "Executive Directors" making big bucks.  One example is the number of food suppliers.  There is CHOW and Vines just to name 2.  I am sure that there are other food give away organizations.

Another organization with a huge overhead is the United Way.  They have 20 employees.  I thought their goal was to collect money, in September for all the orgs and then hand out the money.  The people raising the money, making the presentations, are usually people from business on loan to the UW. Go to their page and look at all of the fancy titles.

Hopefully this will weed out some of the non-profits.

We and others support our local food pantry...no psid "employees.  We don't donate at all to 503c's that have overhead.

The non-profits around Doom County exist to provide income to the ruling and business elite in the form of cushy jobs as "Executive Directors" or sweetheart rent deals for "program space".

Cut airport staff to minimum allowed by FAA, including the newly hired “Deputy Commissioner” of Aviation. An airport with one flight a day needs a Commissioner and a Deputy Commissioner?

Cut BC Transit service in half.

Put the arena and forum on the market.

End BC Stop-DWI. They haven’t put on the Thater races or Holiday Classic in years.

Cut all funding to the zoo, Cornell Cooperative and Chamber of Commerce. We can’t afford it anymore.

I don’t disagree with closing the airport. But I have been told if it were to totally close, Broome County would have to pay back close to $20 million to the FAA in funding it has received over the years.

If true, it is scary.

So what would happen if the last airline flying into BC ended service.  Would we still have to keep the airport open and pay those "employees" ?

Well, if the FAA funding covers the total cost, okey dokey. If not, tank it 😊

Looks like the police may be de-funded no matter what. But hoping NYSP will step up is a nightmare. They don't have enough manpower or funding to take on the job.

Any cop will tell you that the staties have become toll collectors who hate to leave traffic stop duty. (Maybe the troopers themselves don't mind but the beam counters running NYSP do. Especially now that they need the revenue).

It's the local cops including Sheriff road patrol who deal with domestics, noise complaints, vandalism and other items including low level drug dealers. Staties only get involved with big headline cases. I've lived in counties with no road patrol. It was like the wild west.

State police do not allocate sufficient manpower to those areas and low-priority complaints go days without being responded to. Cuomo has dispatched about 100 troopers to NYC just to flex on DiBlasio. They all came from other areas of the state. So there's less troopers all over upstate to start with.

Garner does need to rein in Harder's spending.

The Sheriff, by NYS law, is responsible for running a jail and serving civil papers. Period.

Every elected Sheriff in my memory was completely unqualified for the position.

You are dead wrong on NYSP doing nothing but running radar. They have over the years said that they would beef up if BC disbanded the HP. They regulatly handle all of the same types of calls as BCSO does.

Go get proof from the daily logs before spouting off.

Ask Gordon....he knows.

BC needs either a county PD with a hired professonal Chief (get rid of JCPD and EPD), or turn it over to NYSP.

Get ready people. NYS is in very serious financial trouble. Very very serious.....and chaos ravaged NY City will lead the way for us to bankruptcy with DeBlasio's unbridled nuclear buffoonery. This BS pandemic in conjunction with Cuomo's 2 plus terms of irresponsible financial lunacy has sealed the fate of our once glorious state. Everything and every where Emporer Cuomo has been he's screwed up...from HUD to NYS...to his recent tragic nursing home debacle....the guy has gone above and beyond in proving his incompetence. Hey.....three billion in the red BEFORE the pandemic.....free college tuition...."foreign aid" to Puerto Rico....healthcare for non citizens.....boondoggle self serving economic development projects.... on and on .....all in a one party ruled state lacking any semblance whatsoever of responsible checks and balances. See Nancy Lupardo.

Can one even imagine the loss in sales tax revenue alone?? Imagine a NYC without tourism, restaurants, Broadway, sports venues, etc....Now add to that the hemorrhaging of the top tax paying population to greener pastures. These tax and spend Democrats have refused to be proactive in seeing and acting upon the very obvious fiscal decline of our state , countries, and cities, and now blindly refuse to be reactive and acknowledge what the BS pandemic has exposed relative to oversized government and the number of unneeded non essential governmental workers.....on every level.

We are in serious trouble readers and arrogant Cuomo's fatal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome will only deepen the hole he has dug us into by destroying any future hope for what is sadly....unwarranted federal assistance...especially after November.

They don't even have to move.

I forget the exact numbers, but a large percentage of workers in the city commute from out-of-state, including the highly-paid ones in tech and finance.

What happens to the income taxes you were paying based on the location of your Manhattan office when your Connecticut home becomes your legal place of work?

Under this incompetent out of touch Governor.... tax paying responsible people continue to flee the state and NYC in great numbers. The latest census will undoubtedly reflect the mass exodus which will thereby continue to reduce the number of NYS electoral college votes typically awarded to the Democrat presidential candidate.....nice. I believe tha presently ....before the 2020 census results....NYS has the same number of votes that it did in 1816!!

And.....one can begin to get the sense that Cuomo is aware of this political reality as well as the economic disaster looming ahead by his recent attempt at making light of it all by calling out to those having fled to return and he'd buy them a beer or something to that effect......the very same people who he initially had told to " not let the door hit you on the way out".  Tragically....with him in the Governor's mansion and the clown running NYC....that isn't going to happen.

The guy is quite simply incompetent and in the standard fashion of the arrogant non leader he has shown himself to be, continually lashes out when confronted and finds the need to always, always, always place the blame elsewhere.....and in the case of this population exodus...our weather.

Remember a few months ago when NY was the world epicenter for Corona?

The emperor got his knickers in a twist that Rhode Island put quarantine orders in place for NYers going to that state.

Fast forward a few months an here's the very same emperor placing travel restrictions on not 1 but....

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
