New York surpasses 60,000 deaths during COVID-19 pandemic

December 19, 2021 4:36pm

New York State has quietly surpassed more than 60,000 deaths from the coronavirus, new data reveals.

The state Health Department reported 47,492 COVID-19-related deaths as reported by hospitals, nursing homes and adult care facilities only.

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a more complete death tally based on death certificate data reported by state and city health officials.

The CDC reports 60,253 deaths in New York State, crossing the 60,000 mark last week amid a flare-up in COVID-19 cases from the new highly contagious Omicron strain.

More than 800,000 Americans have died from the virus.

New York surpassed 50,000 deaths from the virus in late March.

The good news: the death rate in New York has dropped significantly from earlier COVID-19 outbreaks because most residents have been vaccinated or built up immunity from prior infection, health officials said.

“We were able, thank goodness, to persuade the older group of people to get vaccinated and get their booster,” said Ayman El-Mohandes, dean of the City University of New York’s School of Public Health.

“We should expect a slower death rate.”

Still, El-Mohandes said, the grim milestone “is a sad moment” for the Empire State.

“All of us know people who have passed on,” he said.

There were 59 deaths on Friday, markedly lower than the 102 daily seven-day average death toll last December, when vaccines weren’t widely available.

In mid-January, deaths peaked at 175 per day, according to an analysis by the Empire Center for Public Policy.

A year ago, there were 8,000 to 9,000 COVID-19 related hospitalizations. By comparison, there were 3,909 hospitalizations as of Friday.

A record number of people, more than 21,000 each on Friday and Saturday, have tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days across the state.

“Covid-19 hospitalizations and deaths in NY remain far below levels of the same time last year. With high vaccination levels + currently steep increase in tests, case count alone is more misleading than ever,” tweeted the Empire Center’s senior analyst E.J. McMahon.

But El-Mohandes cautioned that the Omicron surge could still overwhelm hospitals, disrupt patient care and strain already burned out medical staffers, causing labor shortages.

“We can’t sustain a health care system at a crisis level forever. The health care system is not built to deal constantly in a crisis mode,” he said.

The jury is still out on how many people will get sick or get mild or no symptoms from the latest Omicron outbreak or end up hospitalized. That won’t be evident for another few weeks, health officials said.

The high transmission for the Omicron is cause for concern and people should take precautions, public health experts have said.

“There’s simply no way Covid could spread this fast unless it’s riding roughshod over immunity from vaccination and prior infection. We still don’t know how well immunity protects from severe illness. Will take weeks to figure out protection from vaccine, prior infection, both,” said former CDC Director and ex-New York City Health Commissioner Tom Frieden said in a thread on twitter.

“Even if Omicron is less severe, unless it’s LOTS less severe, it could double the current already-high US death rate to 2,000/day or more by mid-February. There’s a major risk that hospitals will be overwhelmed in the next two months.

“Bottom line: Omicron is still Covid, it’s still capable of doing damage to your body. And it’s still capable of overwhelming our health systems. It’s shaping up to be a hard winter. Get vaccinated and boosted ASAP.

“Older adults face the highest risk of hospitalization and death from Covid, and they need all the protection they can get,” Frieden said.

And this is exactly what happens when you choose not to treat people................but instead just let them die.

Open your eyes!!!!

Or just keep feasting on the fear porn!!

I think I will just live my life as I choose, and not be ordered to live the way the "Gestapo" wants me to.

"There's one born every minute" has never been more appropriate!

So all these people didn’t need to die, in a fake pandemic, if only doctors were allowed to give them medication that they know would have saved them, but they weren’t allowed to use? Is that it?

A gallant effort, Wyatt, to try to talk sense to someone who spent his Sunday cutting and pasting long large font stories from leftist "news" sources, complete with plenty of pictures! Because that's what BC Voice is: a place to post long large font stories from leftist news sources with lots of photos - not just the link to the story, but the actual story. There is no reasoning with someone who expresses admiration for Tony Fauci and dismisses a best selling book that exposes Fauci's many decades of murder and lies. Tony Fauci is able to do what he does specifically because of the Bo Marshes among us.

I did not say that ALL would have been saved, but a damn good amount of them would have been. Instead of treating, they either sent you home to die or shoved a ventilator in you, which was certain death.

Actually treating people was not part of the narrative.

In another thread on here you stated that you "Agree 100%" to something Thomas posted about drugs not being used to treat people..............Yikes!

Maybe you should change your profile picture.

Might I suggest...................

One day soon - I do hope it's soon, for your own sake - Bo, and other leftist media and government bureaucrat sycophants will begin to seek out information from other far more reliable sources. It isn't good to go through life - especially at times like the present - without all the pertinent facts on a situation. It may make you feel an undeserved sense of "accomplishment" and intellectual superiority to go hunting for covid panic porn on leftist sites to cut and paste in their entirety on BC Voice, but all it does in reality is expose you for a poorly educated partisan who's only willing to consider one side of an issue. As government bureaucrats continue to run the covid scam, it's impacting ALL of us. It's very important that we all seek to educate ourselves, even if the information we discover turns out to make our heads hurt because it contradicts what we thought we knew. If you want the truth on this phony pandemic, you need only look to actual doctors who have made it their life's mission, many for decades, to study viruses, vaccines and all things related to health care.

Anyone can order Ivermectin and take as much as they want. If that’s what you choose to do, fine. If on the other hand, someone would rather get vaccinated, that’s fine too. See - if you let people decide for themselves, you aren’t acting like a flaming liberal. Telling everyone that chooses differently from you that they are an idiot is childish. You do not have to get vaccinated. And if you want to believe all the other Q crap about the the pandemic is fake, and even with all the deaths, the virus is all on purpose to take our minds off of a “stolen” election - great. But over 60% of the County does not feel that way. Telling people what to do on either side makes you sound like a left loon liberal. Does it really bother you that much that people have a different opinion? Let people choose for themselves.

As long as the "Sheep" keep following the orders of government edicts / mandates, this Scamdemic will never go away!

Read the freakin Constitution!

They have absolutely no right to lockdown, shutdown, or force you to take an experimental gene therapy or lose your job!

If this is the way you think the United States of America should be run...........you have some serious issues.

They are willing to subject CITIZENS to this kind of treatment all while letting thousands of ILLEGALS to invade our Country at the Southern border!

What is it you do not get?

I don’t get what ‘the error of your ways’ was.

I am pro-vax (not over-vax or mandated-vax). I really could care less if you are vaccinated or not.

I’ve never really supported lockdowns/shutdowns because I’ve never read anything with data linked that they work in the long term. In my opinion, most likely will cause more economic, health, and mental health issues in the long run. It always irritated me when they shut down non-essential businesses (like tattoo parlors and barber shops because those businesses are essential to the ones who own and operate them).

Regarding the therapeutic treatments (I imagine that you are referring to Ivermectin/HCQ), I think that a doctor and a patient need to be the ones who decide how to treat ailments/sicknesses, etc. Quite frankly, it’s none of my business what you decide to do with your doctor. Nor do I care. Perhaps they work. Perhaps they don’t. I suppose I’ve seen enough anecdotal evidence (for instance the gentleman from Taiwan in Chicago who was on death’s door and his daughter sued to get Ivermectin and he made a full recovery, or Joe Rogan, or Aaron Rogers, or Dana White and his wife, or Japan, or India, or Mexico) which would warrant further study or just giving it to people if ‘it does no harm’.

It seems to me that although this time is unprecedented in my lifetime, I don’t watch, read, listen to the news, reports, websites 24/7/365. It seems to me that people here do. And do it quite a bit. If that’s your thing, so be it.

The funny thing with being so connected globally with technology is you can basically find any news, study, information to support your opinion regardless of what it is.

You can argue with people about how your reality is but never be able to change their reality. This generally devolves into name calling which tends to be unproductive and a waste of time going ‘tit for tat’ with someone. You most likely will never change someone’s mind as many people won’t listen.

I don’t know it all nor purport to know it all. It would seem to be virtually impossible to know everything about everything (or even everything on a given topic) especially when I don’t have specific training in infectious diseases, virology, epidemiology, or whatever the subject is, etc.

I’m for spirted discussion. However, there is lots of anger. Lots of division. Detracts from points being made in my opinion and really doesn’t change anything.

This is exactly what I have been saying on here for months - it’s nobody’s business what you decide. Get vaxxed, yay. Don’t get  vaxxed, yay. But some on here do not want you to have that choice and you will be attacked for being too stupid to decide on your own.

So in essence, you've taken a position to not take a position. I'm with you in spirit. But the problem is: the devil with the dress on who calls itself our "governor" is feeding off the public's either tacit or direct compliance and acceptance of measures that make NO scientific or medical sense. In a 30 second newscast, you can hear "Omicron is very mild and doesn't kill anyone," and then one second later "NYS is requiring masks on everyone because of Omicron." There's a disconnect between one piece of information and the other, because one piece of information is being blared from loudspeakers and the other piece of information is being purposefully NOT reported. That leads to a compliant public. That leads to crowds of people for no good reason other than "Kathy says so" to put their masks back on before going into Wegman's. They're no more likely to get the virus or die of it than they were two weeks ago, but Kathy Says So, and millions of New Yorkers say BAAAAAAAAA and face-diaper up. THAT'S the problem with sitting on the fence. I agree that it should be up to the FREE CITIZEN and his/her doctor what health care decisions they make. The problem is, the demons that call themselves Hochul and Garnar do NOT believe that, and THEY apparently get to order the rest of us around as long as they want. More specifically as long as WE LET THEM.

I'm actually very pleased that you're not willing to take my word for anything. I encourage you to NOT accept at face value anything I type. I'm just some random hack on a local message board that not a lot of people visit (unfortunately...). And I'm not a doctor. I'd like to think I'm capable of doing research though, and I am skilled at discerning real information from propaganda. I also obviously have very strong opinions on this stuff: ALL of which are based on my belief that all of us are FREE in this country, state and county to make our OWN medical and health care decisions. I do NOT trust anything the government at any level tells me. Even non-geniuses like myself can see from its psychotic over-the-top relentless response to this phony pandemic that the government is up to something much more sinister. So please, DON'T take my word for it. But not believing ME shouldn't necessarily prevent you from believing the sources I provide.

Regarding Omnicron, initial reports say that is mild with few symptoms. Hopefully it stays that way. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Regarding the masks, I don’t want to wear them. I’d like to see definitive data proving or disproving the efficacy of them. Most likely I’ll never see it or will see valid/reliable evidence proving/disproving both. I’m required to wear one for work. Is a piece of cloth worth my livelihood? Me thinks not. Not a hill I want to die on.

It really isn’t a stand is it to go into Wegmans, Walmart, etc. and not wear a mask (you want to wear one, go for it; if not go for it; you can make a case showing that you won’t comply). Reason being, I think you and I both know that here is no way that most employees will tell you to put on a mask as most likely they have been instructed not to say anything. Businesses want to avoid confrontation and/or having someone on video making YouTube/TikTok memories. (Think: If a business does something well, you tell someone. If there is a problem, you tell everyone.)

The Governor also stated that NYS inspectors won’t perform inspections. Instead the county health departments will be responsible. With all that’s going on, I find it difficult to believe they have the resources to enforce mandate. I guess if you’re really into masks you could say it’s a win. To me, it doesn’t matter. I’d be more concerned with the small businesses and churches having to pay fines when the money can go to employees, owners, and those who need help.

Additionally, I have a feeling that most normal people could really give rip if you wear one or not. If they do give a rip, 99.9% people won’t say anything because it’s not worth the effort. I certainly could care less as I’d rather spend my time getting what I need, leaving, and finding something more interesting to do. I’ve got better things to do with my time. Plus it’s none of my business what you or anyone else does.

Here is the problem with what you and I read. People tend to gravitate to what confirms their beliefs. When you read ANYTHING, you must always consider the bias of said source and why they are writing what they are writing. Take nothing at face value. If you’ve ever watched Scott Adams (from Dilbert) he always talks about the art of persuasion. Think.

Remember, with print circulation being down it’s harder to make money/revenue. The more sensational the headline, the more likely you will click, the more money they make.

Confirmation bias is indeed one of our most basic biases. Add to it the Dunning-Kruger effect, a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.  In a nutshell, those with less expertise are actually less receptive to new information on a topic than those with significant expertise.  The combination leads to lots of people, sure that they are correct, talking past each other.
