He tried to show off his acting skill a bit perhaps for future movie roles. I thought his acting was cheesy. I think if he apologized they may have let him out after say...3 months...but he didn't. As you said, if he just said something like, "You know, it was stupid and it snowballed and I'm sorry." I hope he serves the entire sentence.
