It is believed that this specific fight itself was not drug- or gang-related.

Someone is trying to sell you a load. That is so ludicrous, it's almost funny.

No, not really. This isn't a government official or a law enforcement official. Just someone who deals in facts. They aren't trying to sell me a load at all. They're just not sure it was related to such things, which it may very well could have been. The thing is, with these incidents, sometimes it's just over an argument about something trivial, and becauise of the cast of characters involved, it could escalate very quickly. The summertime incident in my neighborhood, I believe, had nothing directly to do with drugs or gangs. I beieve it was started by two mouthy teen-aged girls. From there, who knows? But by the time it reached the corner of Millard and Lincoln, the group of supporters for either side of the conflict had reached 30-40 people.

Other than putting bars on all their windows. how can working people make absolute certain their homes are secure? If some crackhead really wants to get my TV while I'm at work (and I work full time during the day and part time weekend nights) there isn't much that's going to stop them....other than getting a 90 lb. Rottweiler, which I'm not prepared to do.

Security systems work as deterrents. I have one. Owning a un also is a means of protection, when you're inside the house. And the big dog that's very territorial is always a good option.

What we need to do is hold a town meeting for concerned taxpayers and pressure Matt Ryan to call in some professionals that deal with gang related matters. Its a given He wont let the BPD do the job and im not sure they know what to look for anymore. Im not bashing our Police department here, they do a fine job but i think this may be alittle out of their realm. It wont be long where these thugs will be shooting it out and putting someone in harms way. We need to unite and make something happen here before its too late.

I happend to be driving home yesterday around 5:30 when all this was taking place, thinking with all the Police presence who was watching the rest of the city?

Identifying gang members and activity is simple and not difficult. I don't think we need specialists to tell our PD what they already know and who is who. Trust me, they have a pretty good idea.

Fighting it effectively is another matter entirely. I will agree that our PD may not have the best skills and tools with which to do so and that training is needed.

Well this is a fact: on the pole accross from Lillianas on north st is one of the new cameras Ryan has had installed, im sure if they review the footage they can see what started the action in the first place. Nobody is saying the BPD doesnt know what they are doing just that the Mayor wont let them.

MAYBE if he gave them a contract and the tools to combat whats going on in the neighborhoods there wouldnt be so many selling their homes in Binghamton and moving to safer pastures.

A Desert Eagle 50 Cal should do the trick.

I don't think any gang specialists are going to help here.......unfortunatley it will only waste tax payers dollars but what else is new in Binghamton. These kids are unafraid of everything we will throw at them....They've been born and raised for most parts downstate in the rotted apple and have been moved up here bringing all their street skills with them. We need to hit them where they breathe, to put it bluntly. The mayor has to take the handcuffs off the police and let them rough these kids up a bit...they need to see that theres going to be physical pain and suffering for their acts.....they're not scared of juvy halls, they're probably better conditions there then what they live in now....Now a days were all too scared of "hurting" these kids....It's time to stand up and drop the hammer on them....show them this isn't NYC where you can get away with anything. They hide behind large numbers to try to instill fear into the neighbors so they will just turn their heads and look away....to hell with that....come on my property and start crap, I'll take a baseball bat to they're head, 14-15-16 years old......you want to live an eye for an eye.....Then I'll pop yours out.....time to take OUR neighborhoods back....even if it's one crushed skull at a time!!!!!

I've looked into getting a gun. It's not a foolproof deterrent (and granted, nothing really is). As you said, it only works if I'm home. I'm not so much worried about a home invasion but a burglary when I'm not home. I'm not home a lot.

As I mentioned, I work a full and part time job. Mostly to pay the exorbitant taxes and water rates we enjoy in Bing. A big dog, for that reason, is not very practical. I already have two smaller ones I barely have time for now.

Perhaps a security system might be a deterrent. I know it'll help ID a burglar AFTER they've broken in. If someone is that motivated to get my TV, a camera is not going to stop them. And of course, once they're in, if I have a gun, it's now theirs.

Right now my street is still pretty good. Some of the surrounding streets are not. I live close to one street that is one of the most famous drug purchase spots in the city.

I found that out when driving cab a few years back. Imagine my surprise when I realized I was dropping off and picking up drug purchasers and teenaged delivery boys around the corner and one block down from my own house!

My neighbor told me that she saw some crack packets behind our adjoining garages last year and her wire fence was bent over by the scumbags.

For now, I decided not to get a gun. I got some pepper spray from Gander Mtn.

try taking away their DSS

I disagree that they would just leave town if we did that.

I think that crime would increase. It'd be easier to steal than to move, even if you can put all your belongings in two brown paper bags.

I have a security system, but no cameras. If someone tries to break into my house, there's an obnoxious surprise waiting for them (no, it's not me), that would immediately alert the security company, not to mention the neighbors. So I guess it depends on what type of security system you're talking about.

Yeah, someone could still run in and try to disconnect my TV or stereo, but by the time they were leaving, I think they'd have company.

Those last few notes there, at the end ... just my notes to myself ... one relates to a similar situation that occurred over the summer at the corner of Lincoln and Millard. My neighbors stepped up and we eliminated the problem. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to share how.

As I recall, you did nothing to HELP the situation on Lincoln, and were told (more than once by the police) to take your baseball bat and go inside.

These are KIDS starting fights and ganging up on eachother. The people who need to stop them are their PARENTS. Getting the neighbors all riled up for some vigilante crime fighting is only going to get THEM in trouble.

Really? So the cops should just stay out of it and let Mom and Dad handle it?

What if Buffy's parents don't care, or are on crack?

No. What I said was that the NEIGHBORS and their bats should stay out of it. When two teenagers are fighting and you, as an uninvolved adult, go out there with a baseball bat to end it, who do you think is going to be in more trouble? You are going to be charged with menacing, and those kids are going to be sent home to their parents.

I never said the cops should stay out of anything. They should have the power to hold their parents responsible for their childrens' actions.

Ok. I misunderstood your point. Fair enough.

I still disagree.

If I saw a dozen or more teens fighting on my street and thought were was an imminent threat to either their lives or my property, I would first call the PD. Then, if I had a bat, I would grab it and go outside.

I would not go outside alone without it.

I'd be asking for trouble going out there and being vulnerable and defenseless.

I dont' have any teenagers, but I do know they're not all known for their sage, rational decision making. I also know some of them drink and ingest drugs.

If it were a crowd of adults I wouldn't approach them unarmed either.

If I were carrying a bat at my side and did not raise it in an attacking manner or verbally threaten anyone, there is no way I could be charged with menacing.

"those kids are going to be sent home to their parents."

You say this like it means something to all kids.

You missed my point on that too. What I meant was that NOTHING would happen to the kids, and you would be the more likely one to face charges by going out there and involving yourself with a baseball bat in your hand- especially if they were unarmed teenaged girls outside like in Jensen's case.

Wait how many Binghamton Police were down there? Why does a city the size of Binghamton have that many cops? I lived in Atlanta and Orlando and it seems them combined dont have as many cops as we have. I seen Ryan wants more. This is dumb to me. Why don't we get those lazy DELETED who continue to sit at the D and D and the bagel places in town off their DELETED and do something, then maybe we wouldn't need more cops.

You people think we need more cops, I say we need more intelligent people.
