42% NOT ENOUGH THEY MADE IT 43%!!!!!

So the Binghamton Water Board decided a 42% water increase was not enough so they raised it 43%.

Keep in mind they raised it 25% last year.

So we are facing a 67% increase in three years.

All this thanks in part to Citizen Action's Daphne Gathers, an incompetent flunkie who didn't fill out a FEMA grant application properly, we are told.

So much for listening to the voice of the people on this one.

Wouldn't a Recall Law be a useful tool now!

Binghamton water rates to rise 43 percent

A Binghamton board voted Monday to raise water rates 30 percent this year, followed by a 10 percent increase next year for a combined 43 percent increase over current rates.

City water customers will pay $2.73 per 100 cubic feet under the 30 percent increase and $2.99 per 100 cubic feet for the additional 10 percent increase, city officials said. Customers now pay $2.10.

The increase is to help make up for a $303,000 deficit in the city's water fund.

Matthew T. Ryan and his Citizen Action City Council should be flushed.

This is an April Fool's Joke, right!

Matthew T. Ryan a proponent of participatory democracy would not have rammed through this increase slated for August without public forums, discussion and maybe even a referendum vote, right.

If this were true the Press & Sun-Bulletin would have conducted its own diligent reporting and investigated water rates around Broome County and NY state to inform local residents, right?

The Press & Sun-Bulletin would have looked into the claim that much of the deficit of the Water Department stems from Daphne Gathers, a Citizen Action hack now employed at City Hall like so many others, having filled out a FEMA grant application incorrectly, right?

This is a good joke!

We all know it is not possible to have raised the water rates by 67% in two years, right?

Subject: Water comparisons, why didn't you do them?

Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2008 12:28:02 +0000

Matthew T. Ryan and Tarik Adbelazim will try to tell you Binghamton's increased water rates are in line with other similar sized and aged towns and cities in NY State.

That is not true.

Like we do for firefighters, Binghamton is paying far above the state average, even for smaller cities with a shrinking population and poor economy.

Below you will see a comparison. Most places have a tiered rate structure so for some places you will see three rates. Why hasn't our local news media done some investigating like this?

LOCATION WATER RATE 1 WATER RATE 2 WATER RATE 3

(per100cu.ft.)

Binghamton $1.80* 1.95** $2.10*** three increases in 2007

Binghamton (proposed) $2.99

Rochester $0.97 $0.83 discount for greater consumption

Endicott $35 $1.21 $0.88 discount for greater consumption

Watertown $1.52

Utica (Mohawk Valley Water Authority) $2.21~ $2.24~ $1.41~*

discount for greater consumption

"Readiness-to-Serve" charge applies to all accounts it raises the actual price very slightly

Cortland $2.00 $1.30 $1.50

Johnson City $20.00 $1.68 $1.55 discount for greater consumption

Syracuse $2.02

Vestal $20 $1.48 $2.17

Conklin $2.55

Bottom line, Binghamton is getting screwed due primarily to mismanagement.

Did you notice the Press & Sun-Bulletin revisionism? Why are they apologists for the Ryan Administration.

Monday March 31, 2008, online only the headline read:

Binghamton water rates to rise 43 percent"

by the morning of Tuesday April 1, 2008, the headline in bold in print was:

City raises water rates 30% for '08:

smaller case, no in healdine: 10% hike will follow in '09 under new plan"

The real headline should have been:

67% water rate increase in two years

The Press & Sun-Bulletin is doing a great disservice to its readers by sugar-coating the truth.

More facts, we are told we are talking about only a $300,000 deficit. This increase will pay it all back in a year. I know four or five commercial users alone that will pay half that deficit on their own.
