Benedict said the sexual abuse of children by priests has caused a "deep shame" and called it "gravely immoral behavior."

"Many of you have spoken to me of the enormous pain that your communities have suffered when clerics have betrayed ... their obligations," he told the bishops.

Responding to the situation has not been easy and was sometimes very badly handled, the pope admitted.

Yeah......it goes on for many decades and now all he can say is "Sorry guys. And sorry for not dealing with it and covering it up for so long", which compounded it for decades, too.

"It is vitally important that the vulnerable are always shielded from souls who would cause harm," he said.

Hey, I think he's starting to get it now. But how many guilty priests who made the decisions to field criminal preists will ever see the inside of a courthouse?

If my Grandfather had hidden and protected priests and pastors who were abusing children, you can bet he'd be facing hundreds of felonies.

And in Mayor Ryanesque fashion, he throws in a little deflection of blame, too: "What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today?" he asked.

Will these guys ever really get it? The unending harm they caused to the very people they were there to comfort and protect?

And then the kicker, GWB, the Moral Compass of the World:

In remarks greeting the pope to the White House, Bush was interrupted by applause as he said, "In a world where some treat life as something to be debased and discarded, we need your message that all human life is sacred and that each of us is willed."

"All life" must mean just life outside of the Middle East for GWB.

I love watching two world leaders falling over themselves to pat each other on the backs.

It's so inspiring, it brings tears to my eyes.

Maybe if the Catholic Church would allow their priests to get married or watch porn the alterboys would be left alone...

Hey, I like a little porn here and now and I play Grand Theft Auto, but for some reason I never get the urge to go out and rape alterboys... So, WTF does porn and violence have to do with molesting young boys?

When you put people in the position where they are not allowed to have any sexual outlets in their life they are bound to end up having perverse behaviors.

I think people are using this one quote to criticize the Pope. I am sure his COMPLETE STATEMENT is quite harsh on pedophile priests.

That wouldn't account for most of the sex offenders who live like the rest of us, non-celibate.

Even if you gave pedophile priests the right to have sex, what's to keep them away from kids??

You know, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to complain that the pope was addressing the sex scandal in the Church.

He is publicly castigating the bishops for their mishandling of the problem, has declared that there is no room for pedophile priests in the Church and is insisting that changes be made to insure that something like this doesn't happen again.

What more do you want him to do?

Your remarks are just more trendy anti-Catholic comments with absolutely no value in addressing the problem.

What would you do in his place? Do you have any meaningful suggestions or just more vacuous comments?

How about 'fessing up to the criminal acts that the Church hierarchy engaged in when they shuffled criminal priests around for decades upon decades?

How about making a statement long before the lawsuits have been settled and damages have been awarded? Wouldn't that have possibly decreased the monetary damages his flock would have paid?

If someone like Jeffrey Dahmer apologizes to his victims' families, it's a little more meaningful if he doesn't wait 10 or 20 years to do so. It's a bit more valid if he shows true contrition and does it rather quickly. Otherwise it looks like another attempt to manipulate.

If I were in his place?? Please.

Don't even get me started on that.

How about 'fessing up to the criminal acts that the Church hierarchy engaged in when they shuffled criminal priests around for decades upon decades? OK ... Where am I losing you? The old man sits there and publicly tells the bishops that what some of them did was wrong. Do you need more than that?

How about making a statement long before the lawsuits have been settled and damages have been awarded? Wouldn't that have possibly decreased the monetary damages his flock would have paid? Now how can he go back in time and make any statement? What's done is done and can't be changed. Now is the time to help those who were abused ... which is what he is saying and trying to do.

It's touching that you are so concerned about the money paid out ... as if that's something important.

He's been pope for three years, not 10 or 20. He's addressing the problem now, not later. His actions are open for the whole world to observe. It looks to me as if he's taken the bull by the horns and is doing what he can do.

If I were in his place?? Please.

Don't even get me started on that. Go for it ... get started ... seriously. Heck, I'll even help you out. My suggestion is that if there is any bishop that is covering up or maneuvering a priest around to avoid prosecution he should be removed from office and if it is proven that a crime has been committed he should be held accountable, both civil and criminal.

Your turn ... Don't just complain ... come up with a solution.
