PSC allows water company merger in Tioga

By Eric Reinagel

Press & Sun-Bulletin

OWEGO -- A drinking water rate hike won't be as dramatic for United Water Owego customers, but on average they will pay $80.43 more a year in their 2008-09 bill, according to a state Public Service Commission ruling this week.

The commission unanimously approved a merger between United Water Owego and United Water Nichols on Wednesday. United Water received approval for a three-year rate plan that would raise the average Nichols and Owego customers' yearly bills to $392.31 by 2011.

The new rates reflect a 2 percent increase for the average Nichols' bill and a 57 percent hike for the average Owego customers' bill by 2011.

The average Owego customer was paying $234.08 a year and the average Nichols customer was paying $384.80 a year. The average Owego customer will pay $314.51 in 2008-2009, $371.36 in 2009-2010 and $392.31 by 2010-2011. The average Nichols customer will pay $384.80 in 2008-2009, $422.71 in 2009-2010 and $392.31 in 2010-2011.

United Water, the parent company of both Owego and Nichols, had asked to reduce Nichols' customers' average yearly water bill to $347.94 and increase Owego customers' average bill to $347.94 in 2008-2009.

They should all be thankful they do not live in Binghamton have to deal with Matthew T. Ryan, Tarik Abdelazim and Luke Day, and their incompetence, waste and mismanagement.

Ryan is planning to raise the water rates by 81% not as far away as 2011 but by August 2009.

From December 2006 at $1.65 to August 2009 at $2.99 , for 81%.

Binghamtonians would welcome a 57% increase, that's how bad things are there.
