Guest Tax Payer Watchdog
As we watch our City slide further towards its taxing limit and further into the abyss of economic no return, we see that Mayor Ryan & Assistant Abdelazim have gone before the Press Editorial Board with their State of the City 4 Panels plan for recovery. In their presentation to the Board they once again whine about escalating fixed personnel costs. While this is indeed a very serious concern, Ryan & Abdelazim were obviously not called to task by the now complicent Press as to their failure with the recent budget opportunity, specifically as it relates to their "negotiated" 4 year, no cut settlement with the 10 million dollar Fire Department. To those taxpayers who have little idea as to what this sell out of the taxpayers entails, this is just an initial sampling of what is to continue...for 4 more years: A current Binghamton Fire Department hierarchy with an officer for every 2.3 firefighters. 1 Fire Chief @ $85,715.00 1 Deputy Chief @ $68, 906.00 3 Assistant Chiefs @ $66,352.00 each 1 Fire Marshall @ $68,906.00 1 Fire Training Officer @ $66,352.00 9 Fire Captains @ $58,697.00 each 24 Lieutenants @ $56,144.00 each 40 Officers 86 Firefighters (grade 1) @ $51,042.00 each 4 Firefighters (grade 2) @ $47,467.00 each 2 Firefighters (grade 2 ) @ $43,384.00 each 92 Firefighters And the latest hue and cry by the public is for consolidation of local Police Departments?????? Guest Guest
1 Deputy Chief, 3 Assistant Chiefs, 9 Fire Captains, 24 Lieutenants....an officer for every 2.3 firefighters. Is that for real? Are you kidding me? What could they possibly need 24 Lieutenants for? The company I work for just laid off 2/3 of it's staff. I have to do 4 people's jobs now, plus my own. WTF am I paying taxes to support this insanity for??? Had I known this, I would never have bought my house in the city 4 years ago.

Guest Guest
Now that Tarik Abdelazim has locked the firefighters into a four-year, 14% increase salary contract, now, he thinks it is time to compare Binghamton's budget with other similar towns and cities!!!! I did this three months ago: Binghamton 45,217 (2006) 10.4 square miles 137 firefighting personnel (including civilians) http://www.city-data.com/city/Binghamton-New-York.html Cortland 18,432 population (2006) 3.92 square miles 32 firefighters http://www.city-data.com/city/Cortland-New-York.html Elmira 29,576 population (2006) 7.32 square miles 79 firefighting personnel total (includes civilian) http://www.city-data.com/city/Elmira-New-York.html Rome 34,220 population (2006) 72.5 sq. miles 85 firefighters http://www.city-data.com/city/Rome-New-York.html Utica 59, 082 (2006) 16.3 square miles 120 firefighters http://www.city-data.com/city/Utica-New-York.html Watertown 26,712 population (2006) 8.96 Square miles 78 firefighters http://www.city-data.com/city/Utica-New-York.html Here is the actual state data from the office of state comptroller. http://www.osc.state.ny.us/localgov/datans.../2005cities.xls Watertown; population 26,712; personnel costs $3,388,608; avg $126 Cortland; population 18,740 personnel costs $2,833,220 ; avg $151 Elmira; population 30,940;personnel costs $5,730,101 ; avg $185 Utica; population 60,651;personnel costs $11,344,975; avg $187 Rome; population 34,950;personnel costs $7,582,546 ; avg $216 Binghamton; population 47,380; personnel costs $13,048,257; avg $
Ed Arzouian
Tarik, once your have done you little comparative study, how do you plan to implement changes when you locked in a four-deal a couple months ago? It will all be just more hot air, right? Will you hire Justin Woods and spend another $35,000 for nothing?
