Guest Prisoners on loose Posted March 18, 2008 Report Share Posted March 18, 2008 A RAPIST and a THEIF with long criminal histories are among the convicts on the run after walking away from an overturned prision bus in Kirkwood, NY. A manhunt is in progress for the escapees this morning after three men kicked open the overturned buses door in Kirkwood just before 11 am. Police quickly caught one of the prisoners in Kirkwood but Troy Lowe, 26, a convicted rapist, and Gregory Caulfield, 30, are still on the run. Police are investigating whether the door of the bus was left unlocked or the prisoners were able to force it open. They were unsure whether the escape was opportunistic or planned. One of the escapees was on remand for theft while the other was serving a sentence for theft, Detective Senior Sergeant Thomas Maloney said. "Both men have prior convictions in relation to serious crimes," he said. Lowe was sentenced to five years' jail in 1999 over the rape charge and had completed the sentence. "We're asking the public, if they see these men, not to approach them under any circumstances," he said. The escape occurred as 14 handcuffed prisoners were being taken from a Prison in Hudson Falls, where they had undergone security assessment, to Attica State Prison. Early reports from local police suggested that the convicts kicked open the door of the bus to get out. The prisoners fled from the bus as it slowed and overturned after leaving the off-ramp from the Kirkwood exit and was turning into Pilot plaza around 10.48am. Eleven prisoners remained behind in the bus, some unable to leave because they were in another compartment, while several others chose to stay put, Senior Sergeant Maloney said. Lowe is described as 175 centimetres tall, of medium build, with black hair in a crew cut. He was wearing black tracksuit pants and possibly a white T-shirt. Caulfield is 180 centimetres tall, slim and weighing about 75 kilograms, with short, spiky brown hair. He was wearing blue shorts and a cream T-shirt. ■Police were this morning searching for a psychiatric patient who got away from the bus. Sean Broaders, 44, an involuntary patient, had been escorted by two staff to a 1pm medical appointment but fled from the bus. He is described as having a ruddy, freckled complexion, is 170 centimetres tall and partially balding, with a beard. Anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
