Millions In Pills - Going Down The Drain

What a waste. They should come up with a plan for distributing unused medicine to people that need it. Just think of all this medicine that is going into the water and eventually ending up destroying wildlife and also ends up in your drinking water. Most of these medicines people would be better off without anyway. You should see all the useful stuff that gets thrown away everyday in the hospital. It is a crying shame and goes right into the landfill. A program should be started to be able to donate alot of these things that now just go in the trash. Thousands of people every year die or suffer greatly in this country for no reason other than not being able to pay to get treated or get the medicine they need. This should never be happening in a country such as ours. Time for things to change. :(

I used to work in Pharmaceuticals years ago. I saw first hand how much waste there is. If anything falls off of the product path, ie: a bottle falling off of the packing line before the code is scanned, you have to throw it away. It could be picked off of the catch tray that is 100% clean stainless steel, but it is not a validated production step and you cant just add it in or you would have to do that step every time. It is all part of the FDA regulations. It is tiny little nit picky legislation like this that makes your perscription prices so high. Compliance and constant monitoring to ensure compliance is incredibly pricey. Unfortunately the US FDA is the toughest regulatory agency to comply with. The media would have you believe that it isnt but that simply isnt true. If your manufactuing plant is outside of the US, then yes, it is soft. If it is located in the US, they are tough. All of that adds up to you and I paying outrageous prices for prescriptions.
