Disclosure will never happen because most of these boards are made up of liberal democrats. What you should do when voting for a board of education. Never vote for a former teacher or administrator. Both will take care of those who work as they did as a priority. Otherwise teachers will take care of teachers and Admins will take care of Admins.

People like you are also the root of the problem. You're wrong. People could demand to know the mandated costs- they are paying for them. People should also know how much problem students cost districts and the truth behind Cuomo's claim to be an advocate for the children. Teachers and Administrators are in the same boat here, except Cuomo's plan is worse on Admin's- it will create way more work than they could possibly do. It's going to bankrupt schools, dumb down education, and eliminate all sports- not just JV.

Look at Cuomo's comments regarding the agreement (2/16/12). They're scary- he creates "sides"- he is with the people and the "OTHER side" knows it?! My GOD- educators are not the "other side".

To clarify- I meant PROBLEM (as in bad, trouble makers) students.

Yeah JV programs will not be cut, but JV and Varsity are going to have to travel to games together, and then sit and wait to watch each other play, so if you have a night game for soccer for example, then kids will leave around 3 for further out of town games, and not get back till almost 10- 10:30, wow that seems like a good academically sound idea for kids to save money....hmm.

Yes, very stupid. First- let's be realistic- let the varsity play the regular league schedule and have the JV's stay close to home. They don't have to play the same teams on the same day. They can also play fewer games. Football, soccer, etc can end sooner- 6 football games, 12-14 soccer, 14 basketball, etc. Swimming, XC, track, tennis will not be effected.

Just cut the football programs, it is the most expensive sport.

You're right. If taxpayers knew how much football cost (and no, it does not make money off of gate receipts and concessions) they wold demand that it be dropped.

Why wouldnt they just put the jvs on a secondary field and play at the same time? They have been doing that with modified and varsity in the smaller leagues where they dont have jvs for years?

How about a 10 team, Broome County based, League comprised of: Binghamton, CV, Forks, JC, M-E, SV, Seton, U-E, Vestal and Windsor?

Divide the league into two 5 team divisions based on enrollment. For all sports other than football play each team in your division twice and play the other division once. For modified sports play either each team once or just the teams in your division twice.

It would greatly reduce travel and it's associated costs and the risks of late night travel.

The Elmira and Corning schools have outgrown the Broome County schools by combining anyway. I'm sure they, Ithaca and Owego can find other leagues to play in.

I propose this as a common sense approach that would benefit all concerned. Having a reduced number of games is certainly preferable to eliminating sports altogether.

With the concern about the effect of concussions and the cost of football, maybe it is time to end the sport in schools and by extension at the youth level.

You make a good point. I can't believe there are parents who actually WANT their kids to play at any level. Even the best player to ever come out of the area is involved in a law siut over concussions.

Right. Football isn't that popular anymore. I see tons of kids flocking to watch soccer and field hockey games though.

Get real. Students going to a weekly school football game is part of the high school experience. Varsity football is by far the largest drawing sport in any district. Sure it costs a bundle of money, so what. The cost of all sports combined - if eliminated - wouldn't make a dent in solving the fiscal issues. You can take the approach of trim a little here and trim a little here and pretty soon the dollars add up. Ok - but cutting Varsity football isn't going to happen.

Salaries, Admin, benefits - these make up the bulk of the costs, increases and thus the problem.

What next - don't repave any parking lots because it's too costly. Maybe no more roof replacements - they'll be fine.

Pull your head out of your rear.

Maybe you need to pull your head out of your rear.

If you think that any sport is safe, let alone the most costly one, then you are living in a chicken wing and meat headed dream world.

All sports are in jeopardy and you ain't seen anything yet. Budget season will hit hard, you watch.

Some are sports are safe, or at least the danger isn't in the nature of the sport. Football- you hit, that hitting leads to concussions. It's the nature of the sport. You can get hit in the head with a pitch in baseball, but it's not the nature of the sport to try to hit someone with the ball.

Football is expensive and that's that.

You're right about administration. There are so many cuts that can be made- BOCES should be nothing but a tech school. Getrid of all day BOCES and all of THEIR administrators who do nothing that actually helps regular schools.

A sane, logical response. I have never understood how BOCES has become so entrenched. It's budget is bigger than any district budget. Why? Make BOCES a true tech school, a need that has been ignored and dismissed by all districts. Not all students are college material.

Cut football or make it a regional sport and combine the hs teams. People need to ask what the football budget is, why so many paid coaches and only then will people see how uneven the sports teams are treated. Do football teams really need to travel 3 hours to play a game and having the special busses paid for by the district? Do they need wide screen tvs in the locker rooms? For the cost--just look at the uniforms and start with the $200 helmets, the new uniforms every year, and then multiply that by every kid on varsity, and then add in the coaches, the travel, the equipment, and then add in the costs of the JV and mod teams.
