It looks like Tom could be finished this year in politics.

Sadhwani said her group met with State Sen. Thomas W. Libous, the Binghampton Republican who heads the Transportation Committee, two weeks ago. She said Libous told them he would do everything he could to pass the bill. Libous could not be reached for comment. A spokesman for State Sen. Joseph Bruno, the Rensselaer County Republican who is the majority leader and has ultimate control over all Senate business, said Bruno had yet to take a stand on the proposal.

Will the Democrats finally rally behind a candidate with a pulse? Trabucco barely even ran a campaign and Burns used recycled Democratic rhetoric. I'd argue that Libous's 2002 challenger (NO ONE..) was his stiffest competition in recent history.

I thought the republicans were against this? I was at a republican dinner last week and I thought the speakers were against this.

Libous was at the head table listening to this speech. So can anybody clarify this for me?

Libous didn't decide which side of the fence he was on until way late in the game.

He actually conducted a poll first to see what the voters thought before he made up his mind!

Great leadership.

1. Tens of millions in tax dollars given to the Maines, Matthews, and Akels

2. Tens of millions in tax dollars used to build facilities said for supporters

3. Millions for a 3rd rate hockey team

4. Millions for a useless ice rink at BCC

5. Importation of registered sex offenders

6. Expanded the power of social services and welfare in order to directly increase the number of deviants and miscriants on the dole, thus importing drug dealers and users from Philadelphia and other surrounding areas

7. Countless overpaid patronage jobs for his family, friends, and cash-supporters

8. Pocketed god-only-knows how much cash and cheap real estate in exchange for favors

9. Hosts a yearly stake roast with the sole intent of tallying up who and how much to decide who his "friends" are

10. Helped his son file a lawsuit against us for millions of dollars because the roads were icy and he got in an accident, that is not an exaggeration if you remember a few years ago when he filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit to try to steal tax dollars right from our pockets.

These are just a few in an endless list of scams, abuses of power, immoral, and illegal acts performed by Boss Twead in exhange for power and kickbacks!!!

Libous ® waited about a week before coming out against the idea of illegal aliens getting driver's licenses. Donna Lupardo (D) was quiet on the idea for as long as she could be before saying the idea made some sense. Wouldn't be surprised if Ms. Lupardo wouldn't support the idea again if it came up. I'd bet that John Burns would have been more like Lupardo than Libous.

The only local representative who had the brains to stand up on his hind legs and come out against it immediately was Clifford Crouch®.

Spitzer's idea to "bring illegal aliens out of the shadows" seemed like an idea New York Democrats would have liked to endorse if it weren't for a sudden, surprising amount of public outrage. Spitzer... being the stubborn personality that he is.... indignantly maintained his position despite 70% public disapproval from New York voters. He only backed down when Hillary got that tough question in the Philadelphia debate about supporting Spitzer's position. Bill and Hillary must have sent an angry phone call to the Governor about it.

By the way, Barak Obama still openly thinks driver's licenses for illegals is a good idea.

Such spin.....If you recall Department of Homeland Security LOVED the idea of Spitzer's plan.

The question is why do we have such a “large problem” with this issue in the first place? Answer is….there are jobs for these people. Enforce the current laws and this issue goes away. But that is not working either, so….

Give everyone a “license” and now you have a way to document and track and enforce laws. When these people are confronted by the police there will be a method to identify who it is resulting in a much faster way to administer the legal process. How about beginning the process right then during the administration of the application by deporting those who are here illegally?

Remember this issue did not just begin last year. The issue has grown steadily for decades. Tom Libous and Clifford Crouch have been in office far longer then Lupardo and you roast her over taking a stand and trying to create a solution?

What has Tom proposed to do about the issue? Nothing! He hardly takes a stand about real issues but rather safe issues. Which is better having your picture taken at the Special Olympics giving an award or a picture of you closing the cell door to cheap labor and in the back ground is a farm with a large for sale sign posted on the front lawn? Which one would you choose having your picture taken as you hand a flood victim a NYS check or having your picture taken with the former Governor as he vetoes an environmental bill which mandates the DEC to announce chemical spills to the public within a certain time frame?

Crouch depends on migrant workers, after all, he represents a large agricultural district that relies heavily on cheap labor, and his constituents are not going to want a method to rid them of their source of cheap labor! So of course he is not going to back a method which can address the illegal immigration issue in NYS. In addition what has he done to address this issue?

But perhaps more importantly how is this issue going to address the problems we face here in Broome County? Will deporting the illegal’s lower the high taxes we pay? Will it clean up the Brown Fields which make investors think twice about Broome County? Will it create local good paying jobs? Will it lower crime? Will deporting those people repair the roads and bridges? Will it clean up the rivers and drinking water? Will it stop the drain of people leaving the area?

Has Tom Libous done anything of real value to address those issues? Has Clifford Crouch? Both of them have been in office far, far longer then Lupardo.

Guest-Guest-* has a good list, but I'd rank the tens of millions "Tommy Boy" got for the Glendale and Huron Campus deals right up there together with the millions for Endicott Interconnect Technologies (which, as we all know, has repeatedly downsized its workforce thereby decreasing local employment [except, of course, for Unemployment Insurance intake and caseworkers]).

It seems like it's time for a change, but the "devil that we know" may wind up being better than somebody with no track record, especially given "Uncle Tom-Tom's" seniority.

To be fair, of course, to his "credit" is his sponsorship and work to quickly adopt the law that increased the fines and penalties for speeding in a highway construction zone (after the tragic accident on I-81 in the Town of Chenango a couple of springs ago).

Also, the folks in Nichols are certain to be happy with him for his work on the recent law that kept Tioga Downs open (and re-opened Vernon Downs) -- however, long-term this may be a boondoggle to the extent that it promotes gambling, low-wage jobs, etc. And, do we really need a state-subsidized hotel on-site as is being pushed for?

What precisely is the pont of this posting? All you have done is give a small partial list of the things Binghampton and Broome residents will continue to tolerate.

Would it not be more plite to let people go on in ignorant bliss without being reminded what fools they are?

I'm afraid your version of this is the spin. Michael Chertoff, head of Homeland Security, thought this was a terrible idea:

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/40514

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-11-12-spitzer_N.htm

http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110010814

Chertoff told Spitzer that New York licenses would become useless as valid ID at all US airports if illegal aliens could legally get them. He had good reason to say this.... The 9-1-1 hijackers had licenses and 8 of them had even used them to register to vote! Issuing driver's licenses to any illegal alien was against the recommendation of the 911 Commission.

Spitzer did this in the most underhanded way possible too. Spitzer initially bypassed the Legislature and simply issued an executive order to the DMV to do this. He damn well knew this was stupid and unpopular and he did this to circumvent debate. It didn't work. He also ordered the DMV to remove the "temporary" classification for legal immigrant driver's license to make it easier for illegal immigrants to get licenses.

Spitzer and Homeland Security did eventually settle on a compromise where illegal alien driver's licenses would be specifically designated so they couldn't be used as airport ID.

It was too late though. 72% of normally docile New Yorkers were now outraged at the idea. It wasn't until the day after the Philadelphia wacko lib debate, where Hillary was lambasted by Edwards, Obama and Biden, that Spitzer finally dropped the plan.

Libous is a poor Republican. Just like with the smoking ban in restaurants, he wobbled on the idea for a week before he came down on the correct side of the issue. Lupardo waited until Sheldon Silver gave her her talking points. Since they were so unpopular, she didn't say them even then. Eventually, a series of Talk with Tony listeners called Tony about how they were badgering her for a stand on the issue. She meekly said the idea had some merit. Stupid, transparent, Lupardo... it's obvious she wants to enlist illegals as Democrat voters. She depends on us to look the other way while they do this.

Clifford Crouch was the only local legislator who showed any backbone on this whole subject. Upstate agriculture doesn't depend on migrant workers nearly as much as it does down south. Most of his upstate constituents have the same view as the 72% who were outraged.

Scott

Just another reminder. Obama openly favors illegal aliens getting driver's licenses.

even if you're only a one issue voter, obama is worse than clinton.

http://www.immigrationwatchdog.com/?p=5672

Obama’s intention is to draw distinctions between himself and Clinton on what are otherwise indistinguishable positions on immigration. Both have adopted the standard Democratic approach of favoring tougher enforcement (false promises) along with earned legalization (earned?).

What's with all the anti-Libous posts? Is there some democrtat operative trying to start a grass roots movement here?

The very popular Albany Times Union blog posted on the Libous license for illegals flip flop just today.

Guest Unbelievable!

Tom Libous didn't "fight hard" about stopping Spitzer's plan!

He took a public opinion poll FIRST, then he decided what to do. What happened to thinking for himself, not seeing which way the wind was blowing first??

The funny thing here is that none of the links you posted mentioned Libous ... except his own website.

Bruno was against it, so yes, Tommy did what he was told and changed his stance. You bet your sweet one that Tommy got to be Bruno's boy because he knew better than anyone how to bend over and grab his ankles.
