Am I the only person who didnt know it was illegal to cut into a funeral procession? How would one know that there is a funeral procession unless ALL of the cars were marked with funeral flags? Don't most cars have day time running lights?

ok, i know now. however, how come all your life you have to wait for the DELETED' red light and then when you're dead, you get to cruise right through???? you're going nowhere, have all the time in the world but yet, come right through. i could see if your body was decomping and they needed to get you into the ground, but today that's not a problem.

Holding up traffic, creating more pollution from sitting, so a dead body can roll by.

Who makes these laws, good God.

There is WAY too much value on human life.

I'm not sure if I ever knew it was illegal, but I was certainly aware it was unthinkable to do...if you were to see a hearse, w/ a long line of cars w/ their lights on, I think it's pretty obvious.

A long line of cars with their lights on doesnt really mean anything How many of us have day time running lights How do you know where the line ends?

I always thought people didn't cut in out of respect and consideration. But all things considered what difference does it make? It doesn't matter if they all get to the same place at the same time or not. By the time they park and unload the casket, they are all standing around waiting anyway.

Usually you can tell. You see a hearse and limos with many following. many now use the emergency lights also. I was in a funeral procession once and a car cut me off and out of nowhere, a cop and they pulled them right over.

My son was making a delivery for work in downtown Binghamton last Friday. He didn't know it at the time but he pulled in front of a big black Escalade which was in a funeral procession. The guy pulled up next to my son at the red light and started screaming and swearing at him. Not knowing what the guy was so DELETED off about he flipped him off and drove away. 4 days later a State Trooper shows up on our doorstep looking for my son. Seems this hot shot in the Caddie was adamant that something be done The trooper said he spoke to him on two occasions trying to get him to back down but no... this hot shot wants him prosecuted. He made up some BS story about how he had to slam on the brakes and his wife was thrown against the dash board. IF that were true, I have to question why the air bag didn't deploy and I have to question why he wasn't ticketed for excessive speed. Although he made a big deal about being flipped off he failed to mention what provoked the behavior. Seems he was more upset about being flipped off than the cutting in.

First I want to make it perfectly clear that I am not making excuses for my son. Even though he didn't realize what he had done at the time and even though the man swore and yelled at him first my son should not have flipped him off. Trying to put myself in his mindset I have to wonder if I would have handled the situation any differently. If we want our children to act like adults and respect their elders shouldn't we give them the same courtesy.

Even after cooperating with the trooper and calling the funeral home to apologize he was issued a ticket for failing to yield and making an unsafe lane change. If guilty could be 3 points on his license and 150.00 fine. Of course he will plead not guilty because other than cutting into the funeral procession none what the man claims is true. I hope the next funeral this pompous DELETED goes to that he will be on his back and not able to yell out the window.

Man, what a DELETED.

Your kid cuts into a FUNERAL PROCESSION, then fingers them, and you think it's the other people's fault?

Perhaps you should be a bit more empathetic to the emotions of anyone IN a procession.

Unbelievable.

With any luck, he'll get nailed to the max on the charge, and perhaps he MIGHT learn a valuable lesson.

That, however, is doubtful.

I'm sorry, but either you're full of crap, or your son is feeding you a line.

#1. If your son was in downtown Binghamton, why would a STATE TROOPER be the one showing up on your doorstep?

#2. No cop is going to issue tickets based on one person's word against another's, without any witnesses.

I agree there is certainly more to this story than what was posted. either the poster is fabricating points or the son is not giving the entire story. I am actually a little ashamed that some of you people have that little respect for others as to even make this an issue. How shallow do you have to be to upset that a funeral procession is holding up traffic or inconveniencing you. is this what has become of this society? we have no respect for each other that we have to complain about a funeral and show no respect for a loved one that has passed away.

Hey tarty tart looky here, you want respect ? Take a look at these threads and posts contained within them. Respect ? LOL

The only thing people respect anymore are their pets, their self centered lives and how much they can out do their neighbor.

Yes it's a sad time alright.

Gotta go, time to put my POP-TART in the toaster for breakfast.

I was in the funeral procession last Friday and it WAS escorted by the State Police through Binghamton. There were numerous people cutting into the procession which is rude, disrespectful and dangerous. All cars in the procession had purple "funeral" flags on them, headlights on and 4 way flashers. I'm glad the State Police followed up on this.

I have seen lines of cars running red lights before and assumed it was for a funeral. But if you happen upon this thing after the cars with flags have gone by, how are you supposed to know? Being a safe driver, I would just sit and wait, but I can understand how this situation might cause an accident and further loss of life. Also, I would like to know what law says that state troopers are paid to escort a funeral procession.

For those of you who think this is fabricated Call the Binghamton Police and ask, I did because I thought this a little strange as well. I was told that they can follow up on a call if it is anywhere in NYS. The protocol should have been to turn it over to the BPD. They chose not to. From what I understand the reason there was a State Police escort is because the funeral was for the family member of a friend. (co-worker) That is also why the guy called the state police and not BPD.

For the person who was in that procession- Are you sure EVERYONE in that procession had a flag on their vehicle? And why wasnt there a trooper at the intersection waving the procession through the light? For the funeral Director- It is your perogative to take any route you want, but out of consideration for the community do you think maybe Hawley Street and Main Street at lunch hour was a great idea? Not everyone was on their own time or paid to attend a funeral. Some people were actually working or on their lunch. There arehundreds of State and County Office workers as well as City Hall employees who travel that route for lunch. Employers dont care if there is a lot of traffic they expect you back at your desk and working once your 30 minutes are up

Bottom line the guy was being a dick The trooper tried talking to him twice and he INSISTED something be done, in fact he said if the trooper wouldnt do somthing he would call someone who would Well he must think he is pretty important. There is no way any judge in the world will hear a case on say so. The charges are trumped up, this will get tossed. This is a waste of time and taxpayers money. The case will go to City court The only thing the kid is guilty of is cutting in. You want someone to lose their license for that? Sorry the guy was having a bad day but did this make it any better? I bet the deceased would be very disappointed with this mans behavior.

Guest Guest-Facts Are Better-*

Most funeral homes now provide a purple antenna flag and advises participants to turn on their 4-way flashers. If there is someone in the back of the line with just headlamps on... they are most probably not part of the procession.

In regard to going through the red light... the 1st car in the procession can not just go through it... if it has already gone through and the light changes to red afterward, that is when the procession can continue through as to keep the people together. While people may think, what is a minute or so. Think about it this way... if at each light, 5 cars move into the line... if there are 4 lights, that is 20 cars in between groups... if it is a longer procession and it is broken up a few times, you could have almost 100 vehs in between... so for sure driving under the speed limit and pushing the attendees even farther apart.

It is basically a respect issue. Even if you don't want to accompany a deceased relative/friend to their final resting place... that doesn't mean others agree with you and actually want to be with their loved one to the end. People that think funeral processions are wrong, please stop thinking about yourself and think about others for once... might make you smile. :-)

How many Troopers or police officers do you want to tie up for a funeral to wave the cars through the inter section... they would need one for each. You would then complain about the waste of tax dollars.

You are probably correct though that the deceased would be unhappy with the directors/funeral home employees actions.

Well, I am guilty of cutting in a funeral procession. I had no idea. There was a gap between the cars a few car lengths and I turned it and followed until I reached my destination and exited. I had no idea it was illegal.

Also, I have been in a funeral procession and I stopped at the red lights thinking it was illegal to go through a red light.

None of this was mentioned anywhere when taking my drivers course.

I dont think the tax payers should be paying for a police escort.I think this should be paid by the funeral home They dont need to lead the hearse I bet the hearse knows where he is going.I think the more appropiate place for the trooper would be at the intersection

The guy who made the stink was not an employee of the funeral home He was near the END of the procession It was not clear he was with the processioneven though he did have his lights on (but so did every other car on the road) The point I was trying to make about the police at the intersection was that this man pulled up NEXT to my son at the red light rolled down his window and started yelling and swearing. If he was with the procession he could have gone through the light, right? Seems to me there was quite a bit of space between him and the cars ahead of him in the procession - enough so that another car had enough time and room to cut in. Enough so that he didnt make it through the light and the rest of them did. Think a lawyer or judge wont question this?

Its over and done with. Once my son realized what he had done he called to apologize. Just shows who is the bigger person.
