You're both right. The companies should not have granted it, but were more interested in short-term profits and avoiding a protracted conflict than in long-term viability. The union leadership should not have demanded it, but were more interested in placating their members now, when they were getting paid, than later, when it would all be somebody else's problem.

Same reason many unions end up negotiating mass layoffs over pay cuts: if some people lose their jobs entirely, they aren't in the union anymore and can't punish the leadership, whereas if everyone loses 10% of their pay, they're probably going to be upset enough to rock the organization.

The incentives of labor negotiations are completely screwed up, and it leads to some pretty stupid results.

When I see some unions not wanting to even give an inch in dire times, like many other unions have given back already, it would not surprise me if that governor lays off 5k to get his message across.

They already owned them.

Are you fucking serious? You are sticking up for them? You don't know the costs involved in flying three different planes from the same location to the same location?

He mentioned 5,000-6,000 state workers and 5,000-6,000 local government workers getting canned.

Did three small commuter Lear jets cost moocho bucks? Not at all. If they were huge airliners, that would be a different story.

Nothing like taking three private jets from one airport to another to beg for money. You should research how much they cost an hour to fly before you defend those millionaires working for those billion dollar companies.

Those expenses cannot be tolerated! Only in times of dire need and extremely important meetings should such carbon footprints be made, such as climate change conferences.

That would be a good Start!

Did you hear the latest?

UNION heads DEMANDED the teachers to get back to the classrooms!

Now why would anyone, Propagandists or not go back to the classrooms if they believe they are doing the Tight thing by costing Working people in the Private Sector their jobs?

Do you think the guy who uses the words "local rent a center woodchuck" after getting schooled in debates understands the irony his last statement? Probably not. After all, he hasn't even learned capitalization yet.

The teachers have agreed to the economic concessions, even though the crisis is a creation of tax cuts the governor is giving to business.

The problem is he will not compromise, he will not talk.

So, what was the purpose of this whole thing? Union busting.

Those tax cuts did not add 4 billion dollars to the budget since 2008. Things like welfare and education costs did. When you have -3.6 billion dollars, how does compromise work? Tell ya what, we'll give you x more dollars that we don't have, just so we can have -4.9 billion dollars next year.
