The owner of Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs racetracks says he will shut down the tracks after an Assembly panel this week rejected a plan to increase the split of revenue to the ailing harness tracks.

Jeff Gural, chairman of American Racing, said this morning he will close Vernon, located near Syracuse, on Monday and Tioga Downs, near Nichols, at the end of the month.

Toodle-loo.

From day one Tioga Downs had nothing to do with fairness especially to the patrons.

Very, very few win anything there, and it should close.

The only thing it has been able to accomplish is poor people who have become addicted to a place with one concern, how much they can rake in period.

Well gee of course, I know the purpose of a Casino, this is not a Casino we do not gamble in New York, except at the Indian reservation, there you have at least a good chance of winning now and than.

Close already!

If you don't like it don't go. why eliminate one of a limited number of entertainment venues in this area? Sorry you didn't win-how many "winners" do you know who gamble the slots anywhere? The "Greater Binghamton" area needs more to do, not less. When the horses are running its a cheap fun night out-you can bet a whole $2/ race, no parking or admission charge. People (not just poor people) love to gamble-why not here?

because this is new york state ,that is why the track has been closed most of my life. i am not a gambler and could care if it closed tomorrow. this is new york state businesses are taxed out of business every day. yet they can move to other states and turn a proffit. see a pattern here?

What do you expect? I wouldn't open a business in NYS like that anyways. You just know by opening anything, especially a gambling establishment, that you're just going to get ramrodded with taxes.. Give NYS their huge cut, pay NYSEG which also passes the taxes they pay onto to you and you're pretty much in business to work for NYS..

The NYS lottery commision tells the racino/casino what percentage must be paid back in winnings. Bottom line is the guy ain't making money. Which is the reason he is there. I am sorry to see the place close. It was near enough for me without having to ride a bus or drive 4+ hrs to another casino. Plus it has horse racing. All NY politicians should be beheaded for their crimes.

I agree also that I am sad for it to close, but I don't blame the owner. I give him credit for making such a nice place and doing what it did for the time it was here. NYS sucks everything outta ya when you live here as a person and also as business. It is really sad.

I liked going there from time to time. Good place to go when it is cold outside and there's nothing better to do. It seems like such a waste for it to close.

The newspaper article states that NYS gets around $58 milllion PER YEAR from the operation of slots at Vernon and Tioga. That is a chunk of change.

A larger aspect is that around 600 workers are threatened to lose their jobs. Some may be part time, some may be minimum wage (or most) but take away that income from 600 people and now the welfare rolls will swell.

So............the state has $58 milllion less each year and the added expense of more welfare recipients. E-mail or call your local and state politicians and have them do something about this travesty.

Say what you will, it is not geared for the patrons, gee how much have you lost big time before you get maybe a hit of $20.00, let's see cost you $200.00 to get that.

NYS. is taxed to death,we don't allow gambling, no one seems to get that, wonder why, do your homework.

The new word in NYS is called FEE'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at all your bills from NYSEG to Time Warner Cable, to Verizon go look and see the FEE'S, IT'S TAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This enterprize is the worst one on the block, it is geared to take you. The owners want more of what the the state takes, in their pocket, you gain nothing more than being taken.

Let it go and die!

It was a perfect spot for Garos Drag strip and would have brought in millions to the community if it werent for the powers that be.

It can still be done and should weather you like him or not its a fantastic plan.

Garo had a chance to buy it in '96 but he didn't have any money. to bad so sad.

Yes!!! Drag racing is very popular... Fans will travel long distances to attend... Great location off highway... If Walmart, Target, Kohls, The Press & Sun-Bulletin Printing plant in JC. can all get tax breaks and incentives from New York State why not Drag Racing???

OK lets see now you state that New York make 58 million with these 2 places operating ok I'll buy that.

Now you say do you think the state should fund them with our tax dollars ok honest question.

So if I say no don't give them say ohh I don't know 10 million they close.

And if I give them 10 million to help them make a profit the state will only make 48 million.

Hummm seems like a real tough decision to me.

And let's get something straight they don't want New York state to give them crap they want New York state to stop TAKING so much from them.

You must be a liberal.

Blah....poor excuse for a Casino. You have to have card games. All that you get otherwise is bag ladies pulling levers. Horse races? What a joke. Tioga Downs did everything half way, and nothing completely right. That is why they will fail.

This is funny, yet just as sad.

NYS does tax business's out of the state. I can name 7 that have moved in 4 months that were just braking even, by moving into PA they are now turning a profit.

The answer is no longer left up to the people, it's all about money. Our elected officials have made so many promises on the backs of the taxpayer, and then forgot about those promise's when they gained office, we have gotten use to it and just "accept it" as a way of life.

Places like tioga Downs is just one of many examples of places closing, jobs being lost, area welfare rates/unemployement rates, increase when people loose their job, regadless of how much it paid.

We, the people of NYS have lost our backbone to stand up to the people we elected into office and let them know that we are sick of business moving, we are sick of such high taxes, sick of allowing places like NYSEG and TWC to continue rake in FEES for own gain.

When will it stop ? Plainly, and sadly, it won't. Not until the people start to ban together and stand up and JUST SAY NO MORE. But that won't happen. See, we have become a people who would rather "accept and go along" rather then to take a stand because it is so much easier to "accept and go along" (remember when gas prices first hit 3 bucks a gallon how many people raised cane - but now...we've accepted it).

So when you sit there and whine and cry about how this business is leaving or that business is leaving, just remember something, as a tax payer you might have been able to stop them from closing or moving had you had the back bone to ban together and just say NO MORE ! ! ! ! !
