Planning Commission

The City of Binghamton planning commission meeting has now turned into a full blown business meeting for ACBC. All of their employees gathered at the meeting, lined up at the mic and one by one raved about the pros of ACBC. They are dominating the meeting when they opened & they spoke first. When the board opens the floor for us to talk, it should be open to residents and businesses only. A resident stated it wasn't fair that employees already spoke & Board members were allowing all the employees to speak again taking time away from the residents and business owners that took time from their schedules to be there.

Addiction Center of Broome County is trying to obtain a special permit to house homeless and in & outpatient treatment at the corner of Charles and Clinton Streets. Within a mile from an elementary school, a park and the boys and girls club.

I'm certainly not in support of this, but is there any place in the city that isn't a mile or less from an elementary school, park, or boys/girls club?

This was my exact argument. There are far better areas within the City for this kind of need. Their excuse is "well we already purchased the building last November and it's zoned industrial". This is not the place for this. I don't deny that the need for it is there, it is, but a different location is needed to prevent making the first ward worse than it already is. If this is passed and approved, the extra added stress on City resources & taxpayers is going to be exponential.

To add to that.. The hours of operation for the warming center are 5pm to 7am. If a client comes in for a bed and has any weapons or drugs on them, it's taken when they enter and GIVEN BACK TO THEM when they leave at 7am. 7 am during the cold months when all of the children that live within one mile from Woodrow Wilson will be walking to school. So these clients leave at 7am, are given back their pocket knifes and drugs and needles and off they go into the surrounding community which is clearly residential. The thought of the planning board approving this is just mindblowing.
