keep stroking your own egos coaches. agree with brennan from oneonta. agree with riley in the metro, though small sample size, but would still add murph. it takes more than "not trying to screw up" to maintain the success and discipline murph has with his players and program. agree with hamilton from the west. agrees with dimitiros in the central.

huddock was handed a team in sv that should be successful. mastronardi was just handed a team in corning that should be successful. neither has experienced success that they built on their own.

lets keep this about how the hs teams are doing, and not about stroking the ego of local coaches. anyone coaching to get this hype is coaching for the wrong reason.

What? Someone asked who the top coaches were and a few people responded, thats not stroking the ego of coaches its answering a question. To be honest a bad coach can screw over a program, look at ME, bascially same team when Krise left and Riley took over they go to State Finals, shows what coaching can do. I highly doubt its coaches stroking their ego on the board.

Rick Materese.

31 years of loyal service to his school, and he didn't keep his teaching on the field. He coached generations of kids and taught them to be upstanding students, citizens, and young adults. Coach Materese is a great man and taught me more about being a man than any of my teachers. He is the greatest coach to have ever have come out of section 4

Good guy yes, great educator yes, top level soccer coach not in a long way. For years he had more talent at his disposal than most coaches will ever see and he never translated it into the level of success he could have.

As the next poster said top HS soccer coach in this area was and until someone passes his accomplishments George Herrick.

agree that Herrick is the best ever from section 4. built program from top to bottom and was involved in club soccer, ODP, and NYW for many years. Materese was a good coach and a stand up guy.

George Herrick has a USSF A license as well so he was educated on how to develop and put time into expanding his knowledge of the game. Hamilton from Elmira has done the same with higher level NSCAA and USSF qualifications.

Mastronardi is also a highly licensed coach and seems to be turning the Corning program around after years of mediocrity with a big win last night. He's also a guy that grew up in the Binghamton area.

Well, let's see-Mastronardi took over at Elmira Southside, which is the largest A school in the section, if my numbers are accurate, and did nothing with the program. Were they ever .500 during his tenure? He coached the Elmira JV team the last few years, and guess what? Same thing. Not a sniff of over .500 soccer. He took over a travel team at Soaring Capital that experienced a ton of success under Coach John Bayne. They went from second place in the State Cup tournament under Bayne, to a team that was never .500 again. He has now inherited a team that was potentially the best team in the conference, and began the same way-losing. They lost to Addison HS (class D from section 5), tied two other D schools (yes, they were only 20 minute scrimmages), and then lost to a very weak Horseheads team. Then he was approached by players and "convinced" into switching back to last year's formation, and that is when the success began. This is coming from a former "close" friend.

It seems that STAC West is the strongest division in the league this season with Ithaca, Elmira, and Corning all showing great promise.

The Metro is a close second with Vestal, Maine-Endwell, and even U-E has showed some decent play.

STAC Central is a distant 3rd as Sus Valley and JC seem to be decent sides.

STAC East is terrible. Oneonta is an above average team in a terrible division.

If you have an issue with Mastronardi no problem but at least get your facts straight. He worked hard at SHS for 9 years year round. Not a lot wins but he was dedicated to the program regardless. Arguing that a bigger school should win more games is an ignorant statement as we will then assume that Elmira, Binghamton, and Corning should win the most games every year since they are the biggest in AA. As most knowledgable HS coaches will tell you it comes down to how many kids are playing year round and how you put it together.

JV wins mean nothing as it is about developing the kids for varsity so that point is moot. If you are in a situation to win the game on JV then try to win to give them that experience but not at the cost of the overall picture. As far SCSC he took over the team at U10 and had decent success with this team and did take them to State Cup in 2009 (State Cup does not start until U12 by the way and here is a link to the SCSC website http://soaringcapsoc...ns/index_E.html). John Bayne did coach this team when they were U8 and did a great job with them as he is a very good coach.

Scrimmages are a training tool to see different looks and try different things. At Cohocton they finished 2-1-1 with a loss to Addison who is 5-0 and just beat J-T 1-0. Referencing a scrimmage record (which again this poster was not accurate) in 4 20 minute games is quite amusing to prove any point and a little narrow minded from a coaching perspective. Losing to HHS was an "aberration" as someone noted earlier on this board and now they are starting to play some good soccer. Corning has some good talent that was developed by Corning United, SCSC and the previous coach for many years so we will see how they progress.

Mastronardi is a qualified, dedicated, and well-respected coach in the soccer community. Tell his former "close" friend to get his facts straight.

Wait 3 of the 4 biggest schools in the league are good (or at least better than the small schools)? Smaller schools that have strong football programs (CV, CF, Norwich) struggle more in soccer? Not really a news flash, Only 4 small school teams have ever won STAC Oneonta and CF over 20 years ago, SV and Owego about ten years ago. Other than that its been dominated by the AA size teams, Binghamton has been the only large school to struggle forever.

The STAC East like some MAC and IAC teams really are struggling overall with the large population losses from many flooded areas and places that lost businesses. When schools lose huge population numbers its going to hurt some sports and soccer has taken a hit in many areas. When schools with 400 kids in the top three grades compete with ones that have 400 in each grade its common sense to say the smaller ones will be at a disadvantage.

If Owego classifies as a "small school" then wouldn't EFA have been a small school as well? They were are both schools around the same size and EFA won it in 2008

You have played 2 teams with winning records and lost them both thats about all that needs to be said. If you can beat Oneonta tomorrow you might be able to be seen as better but beating Windsor, CV, Seton and other weaker teams doesn't impress especially when you will be facing the M-E, Vestal teams in Sectional play. You lost 8 of your 11 starters thats not a some thats a lot.

JC isn't a top 10 team in STAC and are probably going to be the #3 seed ( out of 4 teams) in Class A. They'll most likely to be paired up with Maine-Endwell win the first round of sectionals and M-E will beat them 3 or 4 to 0. It's going to be a short, uneventful season for Johnson City this season.
