Maybe they’ll just have to add some extra time so little Johnny gets it then, teachers are always glad to take the extra time to help a student in need. They told me so.

if ur little Johnny is anything like u, it won't matter. He'll be sniffing glue with the other wastes of our society...

wait till ur little Johnny doesn't get anymore extra help with his math or reading. Enjoy the substance and miss the fluff.

Not a good attitude but nothing unexpected.

No need to abolish the union. Let them be a choice. Making NY a right-to-work state would benefit everyone - even those teachers low on the seniority totem poll. Check out comparable stats between right-to-work states and the grand empire state. Key metrics rise across the board. But what are the chances, really? Blood from a stone would happen first, I'm afraid.

How about school vouchers? I would take my dollars elsewhere if given a choice. These school administrators and teachers are killing us with their outrageous pay and benefits (just like our JC firefighters) and continue to provide a marginal student.

If schools had to operate like a business, we would see lees fluff and more substance.

For those of you who think schools should operate like a business, go read this story about blueberries:

stupid comparison, probably posted by a el ed teacher who drank her way to a crappy degree at a suny school

if you really want to make the analogy, the students would be the customers, not the raw materials.

bottom line- stop developing silly metaphors that a 3rd grader can poke holes in and do your job- or quit

You have pathetic writing skills. No wonder you could not understand the story.

Great post

Sheldon Silver the shylock from NYC would never do anything to damage his unions. new York State politicians are very corrupt and have ruined the State.

I read this when it came out and remember discussing it on this board near that time 10 years ago. Ah,blueberries. For some reason everyone thinks that a business would be crippled like the schools if they were given poor raw material. Well given the line of thought that you have to make something exceptional out of that raw material they would be. That isn’t the way business does things. When you are making a top of the line product you use top of the line material. Still when you are buying anything in bulk from fruit to computer components there is a cost for all grades you are buying. In some areas you can use the rejected material in another process and still make something that will make a profit in the market place. If like in the story it is blueberries than sorting is important. The best tasting best looking berries will be chosen to go into your top product. Others will be rejected for that product can be used given the product isn’t something that the customer wants pleasing to the eye, such as juice. A schools product is comparable. Not all the students are going to be sought after graduation some will be and some will not. The idea is to produce the best product that is possible at the lowest price. Even if you do everything you can some of the product is not going to make it to market but to stay in business you have to produce a product that the customer can use in some way.

In other words sort the students at a early time and try to give them an education they will be able to use in society. Not all students are going to go to a top college but given the right education most will be useful. Some will turn out to be leaders and some ditch diggers. If they can do neither they will probably become teachers.

You did so well until that last sentence.

This is why we need to reward GOOD teachers and get rid of the administrivia at all levels. Get rid of the mandates which have proven nonproductive and simplify the processes/hoops that only seem to create paper pushers.

The point of may post was really to show just what you stated. A business tries to use everything without waste. Some waste in inevitable but must be cut to the least possible. They only do this to stay in business and make a profit.

Businesses are run much differently though. They do reward the good but they also punish the bad. Rewards are handed out by success in implementation. You produce and you gain, you do not and you do not. Almost all rewards are set by the goals that are met. If you continually miss the minimum goals you maybe reassigned to a new job or removed totally. You will rarely see an employee that doubles the starting pay in their grade when doing the same job as they were hired into. Employees are hired and paid for the job that they are need for and paid according to the difficulty of the assignment.

School districts are hampered by state rules and mandates and the union is also something that has its drawbacks. The whole system really needs attention to bring it into proper operation.

Agreed. And the tax cap is a good start.

But that won't hold up because its unconstitutional. People keep naming other general elections/votes that require 60% to defend the tax cap in NY as constitutional, but I have yet to hear of one. Not congressional votes, or senate votes where vetoes are involved, general elections/ budget votes? The real problem is a lack of participation of the community in budget votes and BOE member votes. Everything has been rubber stamped and it has added up to this catastrophe.

No, it's constitutional and you'd be better off staying under the tax cap instead of your silly union law suits trying to milk every last dime out of the taxpayer.

This isn't an election.

You need 3/4 of the states to pass a constitutional amendment.

Read the section under United States for examples. As already pointed out this is not an election, so let's just go ahead with a frivolous lawsuit and waste more money rather than focusing on the real issue.

"any action that may alter the rights of a minority has a supermajority requirement...." Alter the rights of the minority? You mean the people that don't vote, or don't have enough votes? Seems unconstitional to me. If 51% want something, than that's the way it should be? Maybe republicans can get this procedure passed to elect themselves? LOL!! And how does a school budget alter the rights of a miniority any more than when the miniority loses any election? Take the republicans right now for example? This law won't stand up! What about the rights of the majority? I guess those don't matter?

He'll have to leave the area to find a job. He's not going to stick around this area just to coach hoops.

Sadly, you are probably right. The unions voted poorly when picking (literally per centage points) raise over smaller raise. No union vote. No district vote. The union ate its young and consequently the vibrant teachers and thereby coaches got whacked. ME loss, another districts gain. Unfortunately for upstate n y.... It will probably be some warm vibrant climate where collective bargaining and tenure are realized for what they really are, largely a tool for the lazy. The union teachers get what they wanted even secondarily... Sticking it to the sports programs. Sad really. Shame on the few that screwed the many.

You have to remember you are not voting on just the budget you are requesting to override a rule of law. If the budget was within the scale provided you wouldn't need 60%.
