(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) A Town of Union man is facing a felony charge after destroying an interview room chair and door handle while in custody at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

On Saturday April 20, 2024, Masai Andrews, age 41 of Endicott, NY, was arrested and charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration following the “Smoke Weed Outside the Binghamton Police Station” event after intentionally interfering with deputies attempting to take an individual into custody.

While in custody at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Andrews was placed in an interview room and, as part of standard procedure, one of his hands were secured to the wall via handcuff. A short time later, Andrews laid on the floor of the interview and utilized a chair provided to attempt to pry on the handcuff attached to the wall. Andrews attempts to pry the handcuff bent and broke the leg of the chair, rendering the chair unusable.

Shortly thereafter, Andrews asked deputies for an ambulance to evaluate his wrist where it was handcuffed, claiming he had an abrasion from the cuffs being too tight, failing to mention that he was using the hair as a prying leverage on the handcuff he was affixed to. EMS personnel responded to evaluate Andrews, but Andrews refused any kind of medical treatment.

A short time later, with the handcuffs now off, Andrews laid on the floor of the interview room and kicked the interior handle of the interview room door, shearing it off and rendering it destroyed and inoperative.

Following an investigation, which included a review of the security camera footage, the damaged chair and destroyed door, a Warrant was issued for Andrews for Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree, a Class E Felony.

On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Andrews was taken into custody without incident when he turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Correctional Facility Visitation Lobby. Andrews was processed on the charge and remains in custody awaiting Central Arraignment this evening.

“This is an example of needless destructive behavior by a grown man,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “Our law enforcement team made every effort to process Mr. Andrews efficiently and without incident, but his destructive behavior exacerbated a minor offense into a felony charge.”

The reason people like Masai Andrews feel so entitled that they break the law and destroy property is because for years we had Dave Harder and Mike Korchak refusing to prosecute them. With people like Andrews, if you don't punish them for their crimes, you embolden them.  Harder and Korchak only made the situation worse by turning a blind eye to PLOT.

Once again Sheriff Fred Akshar stands up to the scumbags who are knowingly trying to destroy our quality of life in Broome County.  Thank you Sheriff.

I just saw this on Mobil patrol. Hopefully akshar knows what he’s doing hitting him with a felony charge to get him fired from his job. Masai has gotten lucky with only misdemeanors to prevent losing his nys job

Agreed. Wait and see approach is the best option here.

Yes and Fred made sure to release the video of him committing the crime exposing Masai because Fred knows Masai crowdsources and profits off these arrests by claiming it’s unjustified and he’s being targeted and has people online sending him money.

With the release of this video it hinders Masai and his efforts to profit off it.
