Was this an inside joke about a scandal we haven't heard about yet? What could the context possibly be that the town is so desperate to get Butler out of there that they paid him off with a quarter of a million dollars to agree to retire "amicably", with a non-disparagement agreement? I have no idea how old he is but he appears to be a cretaceous fossil who should have been ready to retire the old-fashioned way with no further incentive. I'm betting the opposite...they're paying him to not write a best selling novel. Of course if he wanted help writing that novel I will gladly volunteer. Presumably, it is the same thing that individual was joking about, and then there was 12-18 months of negotiating. Vestal taxpayers should be asking for answers about why, exactly, his continued presence is such a liability that he's getting about two years worth of a free ride to simply get him to stop showing up at the department.
